Winch without winch bumper? Can it be done or is that just dumb??

Don't forget also that you can shed some extra pounds by going to a synthetic line. Especially on a 9500lbs winch.

i was looking into purchasing a winch for my tracker, haven't done anything yet..  you don't need an 8000lb but if you're stuck in some major crap it might save you an hour or shoveling the worlds stickiest muck that's acting like a suction cup around your rig.  that is about the only reason i could see this size being needed.  most guys i run with use 8000lb winches on their heeps that weigh more that our zuks and they have no problems, i'm set that when i buy i'll be going 6000lbs or less.  that 9500 from costco weighs over 100lbs with the tray!  i dunno what you have for springs but they're gonna sag under that weight!  i think warn or superwinch has a nice 5000lbs that weighs less than 50lbs, change to synthetic line and you'll drop another 10lbs.....  small also.   i'm on board though with not have a winch bumper due to cost and weight, this is the route i plan to eventually take, just too much other crap keeping me busy these days .....   good luck!

They're rated as a rolling load, ie not stuck!! Level ground with max rope left on the drum (=max. leverage). Its easy to push a Zuk in those conditions but consider the difference when its stuck. I have an 8000lb winch and have still had to double it back when winching almost vertically out of a very muddy hole. It helps to double back and use a strap as this halves the load and keeps more rope on the drum.

Thats exactly the sort of thing that I was thinking of. The only thing that bothers me is winding the rope back on evenly, can you see it going on?

If a winch gets submerged in water, is it useless?  Also do larger winches have longer lines or at least the ability to handle a longer line?

IMHO the weight difference between the 5000 and the 8000 is not great enough to warrant avoiding the extra pulling power of the 8000.  I have run them both on the sami and the 8000 really in nice as others have said when you are winching others with larger vehicles out.  The extra pulling power is useful as well when you have 2-3 snatch blocks going to pull your rig forward and up a sidehill.  The bigger winches will hold more of the bigger cable; but synthetic rope is probably much better in almost all applications.  If it breaks, it falls to the ground; and you can re tie it.  The 2" receiver set up is nice as well to avoid the weight on your front end all the time, but it does have to be stored in the rig then.    Just my .02.   ;D

Mine was a cheapo winch and I've had no problems with water. The drum got seized up with mud but I stripped and cleaned it and it was OK. I checked the gearbox and the gaskets had kept the water out. The cheap winches do get hot relatively quickly. You have to take your time doing recoveries to avoid burning them out but then its not like you were going anywhere  ;D

It's not much more $$$ for the 8000lb and it's WELL worth having the extra power. People with 6000 lbs say there are times they hear the 6000 working a little too hard. If you ever 'upgrade' to a Tracker, or ANYTHING larger, a 8000 will be a must have.

i agree that you can't argue with power, and if you want cheaper its always cheaper to buy what costco has on sale like the 9500 mentioned.  if you are prepared to set up a receiver to take the beast off go big!   you'll probably need a very secure mount inside also, i'ld hate to have something like that at risk of flying around if something happened.  i've never seen less common sizes like 5000 or 6000's on sale anywhere......... the 5000 i mentioned is like $700CDN!!  if you do go the receiver route try to set it up above the stock bumper cause in the wrong place you may not be able to get at it very easily

That's exactly why I'm building front / rear bumpers with 2" receivers, and putting the winch on a 2" mount.

I'm not going to argue about the size winch you need.


Just today I used my 3000lb. Milemarker winch to pull the front of my Tracker sideways out of a hole against a tree... Single line pull and no problems at all. I've used it more than half a dozen times by now and I've only ever had one problem the whole time. The cable broke on a pull up a steep hill, but it was my own fault for slipping the clutch to help it and shock loading the cable over the edge of a rock... Every other time I've used it to pull me off a high center or out of a mud hole it's worked beautifully.
