How to remaove transfer case shifter
« on: March 25, 2006, 07:59:36 PM »
hey guys
I just did my 3" budget lift and it turned out alright, tomorrow I'll slap on a temporary bumper. My problem is, how do I remove the transfer shift lever, I would like to extend it.
I read the Haynes manuel and it's really quite useless. I notice there are two bolts one at the front and one at the back just below the rubber boot. If I remove these can I pull the shift lever? Or does the entire cover need to come off from the transfer case?
Thanks
Jim

Ok,

Remove the boot from the body, now see the small round black boot around the shifter,it has a metal lock ring on it,some say it can be reused but I just cut mine off and used 2 zipties to replace it.Now there's a round metal piece in side the transfer around the shifter.Push down and turn counter clockwise...It's kinda hard to do but then the shifter will lift right out.Just make sure you get it back in right...test it before you put the boots back on.I extended mine at the bottom so the shifter still had all the same angles etc.

Same removal process, wear gloves
to make sure you don't slice the ends
of your fingers on that bayonet fitting

Thanks, I'll go try that this morning. If the rubber boot is rotted will crap be able to get into my transfer case, or is the shifter isolated?
