MTRs got my vote. Next to Krawlers its the best all around tire in my opinion. I had great luck with them in the snow and ice. :-/ Are you sure you were aired down enough? Im also partial to Swamper Radials. I think 10 inch rims are in order for any 12.5 though.

I have run 12.50 on an 8 in rim and had no problems.  In fact I think it was a better ride and you will notice more when you air down more sidewall flex. 8)

what 33" tires should I go to?

....

Round ones are good.
I heard square ones aren't in style anymore.

Style has something to do with it?  Darn!
Well, I run a lot of rock - Slickrock, whenever I can, and the rocky/sandy trails of the Rocky Mountains the rest of the time.  I DO like my MTR's, except when I hit slushy snow (I'm talking about on paved roads) - they don't do that good.  I have a friend with 35's under her TJ, and she's got them siped, and seems to work pretty well.  When I asked the Goodyear guy about siping, his eyes got kinda big, like I had just suggested performing lewd acts with his little sister, and said "NO, you do NOT want to sipe them!"

We didn't sipe our MTRs...  I don't think they need it.  The lugs seem small enough and have factory siping-type notches in them anyway.

Dunlap Radial Mudrovers (Official tire of LMS).  They perform just as good as MTR's...if not better, and they're much much lighter.  Plus you can pick them up at tirerack.com for under $500 a set.  I run 33x12.5's and RealRedSammi runs 35's.  Couldn't be happier, they're the perfect Zuk tire.

Well I'll throw in another option just to make your decision even more difficult.  I have Kumho Venture MT's on my toyota.  I love these tires, most people think they go better than the BFG MT's.  They don't do bad on hard pack snow, they do real good it deep snow and good in mud too.  The little bit I've run them on rocks they do good too.  The tread is nice and soft so they bite well.  I've run mine 10-15k miles and they are hardly worn.  Check them out on my toyota here You can buy them from www.tirerack.com too

+1 on the Kumhos

I have a set of 31"x10.5" on my zuk now, and I'm extremely pleased with them.

I will be bumping up to a set of Kumho 33" x 12.5" in the next couple of months.
ask me about GonZookin!

Weird... I Don't think anyone except Mike has recommended a tire that they are not currently running. Can everybody have the best tire on their vehicle at the same time?  I thought the "grass is always greener." :o

Tire threads are always facinating.

I like my MTR's  32x11.5 on 8" wheels.  They seem to go where I want them to.  Also are quiet compaired to others.
