96-98 1.6 16v wiring question

96-98 1.6 16v wiring question

Can anyone confirm for me that a 96-98 tracker, sidekick, and x-90 have the same wiring harness and coil-in-the-distributor set up?

I did a 1.6 16v conversion into my '88 samurai a couple of months back with a 96 tracker and now the engine died.  I'm seeing different prices for rebuit/used engines (x-90 being the cheapest).  I think it should all be the same, but I want to just swap and plug in a long block and not have backtrack through the wiring conversion again.

As long as it is a 1.6 (some sidekicks (sports) had the 1.8), they will be the same.

If you are just looking for a complete block (no head)....any 89-98, 1.6 trackick (8v or 16v) or x90 block will work.  The 16V head will fit any 1.6, 8V block.

I realize the Sidekick Sports had 1.8s.  Basically, I want to make sure when I buy a used engine that, regardless if it is a 96-98 Tracker, Sidekick (non-Sport), or X-90, that my harness (spliced by trailtough) will plug right in and that there is not a different computer module, plugs, etc.

I'm asking 96-98 because I believe that is when the Tracker (and I assume the other two) integrated the coil into the distributor instead of keeping it as a separate unit.

You don't give enough info, is it obdII or I,What died on your rig?

Then you will need the oil pump with the sensor on the bottom of it and the oil pan to match, the head will fit the older engines but you should have the notches in the pistons x4 each and the crank's on the 16 valve are a double counter weight I think.so they are alot better, you could get an esteem engine and change some parts around.

I plan on using my 1.3 pan and modified pickup tube off the junk engine.  I need the clearance, so I won't be using the 1.6 pan and I removed the crank position sensor from the front of the engine so my 1.3 pan will fit (After asking trailtough to make sure it was ok to do)

Well that'a a new one on me having an obdII run without the crank sensor, I have seen fords that would not even start with a loose wire to the crank sensor.

It will run but it will revert to asynchronous injection. It will run better with the sensor fitted. Theres an article somewhere that shows how someone cut and shut a 1.3 pan to fit the sensor.

I saw that same write-up on cutting the 1.3 pan, but before going to all the work I asked trailtough about it.  I was told it was ok to take it off. 

To tell you the truth, the thing ran great (up until it of course died a horrible death), had plenty of power, idled at 800 rpm.  From what I understand, there is a second sensor on the cam and when they crank sensor is not there, the ecm will use the cam sensor to set the timing.
