my new vitara/ tracker

my new vitara/ tracker

Hi,
i have just got a 1995 vitara in the uk, mainly for road use so i can turn my sammy into a beast!
All seems good,
but i have noticed that the gear lever is loose, it has lots of play and can move up and down, i think it pulled hard enough it might come out!
is this an easy prob to fix?

When you say up and down I'm assuming you don't mean up and down into the gears.  More like out away from the transmission and down towards the transmission?

That's normal to some extent, every manual transmission that I've had or used has done that a bit.  Now if it's thunking and clunking up and down without any effort I don't think that's quite right...

The gear lever is held in by a bayonet fitting if one or both of the pins is broken or missing then the lever will be loose

That sounds like the problem how do i get to that to fix it, do i need to take the gearbox out?

Yep, there is a bayonet-style cap that holds the shifter lever in place.  If this cap is missing or damaged, the shifter lever will easily pull upwards out of the transmission itself.

There are also two bolts in the shifter "hole" that act as pivot points for the shifter itself.  If either or both of these bolts are broken, the shifter will exhibit "sloppyness" in moving through the shift pattern -- shifter rotation and difficulty in easily "hitting" a gear shift.   Although a classic failure on the SJ-413 (Samurai) 5-speed transmission, I have never heard of that failure on a Vitara/Tracker/Sidekick manual 5-speed.

I vote for Rhinoman's diagnosis!

there is also a plastic collar that sits in there that can easiliy go a miss or break u that will cause slop

I can find the gear fine, its just loose, im pretty sure that it sounds like the bayonet fitting, how do i find it?

Remove the rubber boots from the inside of your trucklet under the plastic console.

Place gear leaver in neutral position then where the stick goes into the gear box there's a sheet metal piece around the top, push this down with your fingers and rotate it (can't remember which way) it will the pop up allowing you to remove the stick.

You'll then see the Bayonet fitting on the sheet metal part that they are talking about.

Cheers mate, i got the afternoon off tommorow, so il try it then

Lets hope it works,

If it is the bayonet pin, can i just ring up my zuki dealer and get a new one?

hi!

i think u found out what wrong, underneath the metal bit that you push down, there is a spring, that spring has broken, therefore not putting tension on it, and the gearlever being loose!

I'l ring up my zuki dealer tommorow and see if they can get me the spring! bet its gona be an expensive spring!

Time for a trip to the breakers, the gear lever only comes as a complete assembly and it isn't cheap.

Got a new assembly for £55 ($90ish) from my zuki dealer,

Problem is now i cant get the old gear knob off the old shfter! it proper stuck, it is just an unscrew right?

Also it look like its gona be tricky to compress the spring and turn the bit on top of it at the same time.  Is it gona be hard?
