88 Sami electrical problem.
« on: October 09, 2012, 05:42:54 AM »
My samurai just started having this electrical issue earlier this year. It is my hunting rig so of course I wait til hunting season to fix it. Every time I touch the clutch it loses electrical power and wants to die if I don't hit the throttle. The lights dim, the radio goes off and it tries to die every time. And I don't have to push the clutch all the way in for this to happen, just tapping it is all it takes. I have checked all wiring and fuses, and this is really starting to frustrate me. The only other thing that I can figure that might have an affect is the battery. Now that I think of it I put  a battery on it not too long before this started. But the battery starts the engine fine every time. Could this happen if the battery is faulty and doesn't have enough juice?  Or is it more likely that I've got a short somewhere. Not a mechanic but i know how to work on stuff if i know the problem, finding the problem is a different stiry sometime.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the clutch cable might be acting as a ground for the engine.  Check your negative battery cable from the batter to the starter.  Also, check the ground wire from the distributor to the firewall.

Check and make sure there is a heavy gauge cable between the battery negative and the bellhousing - it sounds like that may be missing also.
