I have replaced quite a few clutches in my day but never one on a Tracker.  My cousin the "certified mechanic" said that he had to remove the transfer to pull the trannie on the last one he did.  Is that true?  Any tips shortcuts or extra steps I might need to know about would be helpful.  Please please please.......

I have found it easier to remove the transmission and t-case together than trying to seperate them in the truck. In the manual trucks there is a bolt under the shifters sliders that is almost impossible to get to while in the truck.

Taking them out together is not to hard of a job. Just make sure you put a block or something between the firewall and the motor so it (the motor) does not tilt back and damage the distrubtor. Then support the trans/tcase, remove bell housing bolts, remove shifters, then drop the crossmember that supports the tcase. As you lower the trans/tcase, unhook the vent hoses and indicator switch wires and slide it out.

I dont think I have left any thing out, if I have someone please add in.

If you can get one, a FSM will show you in detail how this is done and show you the locations of all the bell housing bolts (I had a hard time finding one by the starter) Oh yea, that reminds me, I think you have to take the starter off for some reason.

Can I leave the crossmember attached to the trans?

I dont know :-/ It would be very awkard trying to line it back up with the crossmember attached. I think you have to have it detached to get it out, but dont remember. It's only a couple of bolts holding it to the crossmember.

I think (not positive) that you have to take the crossmember out seperately, because it has to be maneuvered out... Would be pretty akward and difficult to get everything in and out with the crossmember still attached.

1-remove shifters
2-remove both F & R driveshafts(mark them for alignment)
3-block the motor as stated above, remove the starter
4-loosen the bolts from crossmember to trans and motor to trans/transfer
5-jack the trans/transfer up a smig (smig is a technical term )
6-remove crossmember, all bolts and slider her back
7-let her down a lil bit, unplug wires then take it the rest of the way down.

i have found that having the car seculy jacked up really high helps in the garage, and just remove the 2 bolts holder the starter to the bell housing and sort of hang the starter there, you dont have to unplug it (make sure your battery is unhooked!)

if you have done a few you will find this really straight forward, it is simple and pretty light.  good luck
