I just bought a 91 tracker and I'm having problems shifting into 2nd and reverse. When I down shift into 2nd(like if I'm going 45 MPH in 4th and slow down to 20-25 MPG and shift into 2nd) it will grind, but it does not grind if I'm accelerating(shifting from 1st to 2nd) and sometimes it will not shift into reverse, I have to let it roll forward or backward and then it will shift into reverse. Is the problem the clutch or tran? Any help would be great Thanks.

Reverse is unsynchronized so if it is grinding when you try and put it into reverse then your clutch is not releasing. The grinding on downshifting can also be the clutch but could be the wrong trans oil or bad synchro. Is your shifter sloppy? There is a plastic bushing at the bottom of the shifter that wears out that can cause it to be hard to get in any gear. Some times GL5 gear oil is put in the trans and they will not shift right with that. Should have GL4 which is not as slippy so synchros can work.

Also the clutch drops off at the end, there is tension until it gets to about half way and then there is no more tension and it just drops to the floor. Is that normal for trackers with the mechanical clutchs? This is my first tracker. I appreciate any help you guys can give me

I'm thinking about changing the tran oil, but I have a question first. If I end up having to replace the clutch do I have to drain the tran oil when I drop the tran? I don't want to change the tran oil if I'm going to have to drain it to check clutch if the new oil in the tran does not fix the problem.

I change the oil ever time I pull a transmission and t-case.  That way I don't have to worry about oil draining out the back after I pull the drive-line or have it leak out the breather hole on the top if the transmission is sitting on it's side.  It also makes things quite a bit lighter.  Don't forget to drain the oil from your t-case as well.

As for your question on the tension for the clutch, I have tension for most of my travel.  So you might not have a lot of tension in your clutch.  Do you know when it was replaced last?

How many miles on it? First thing I'd check would be the clutch cable. It's common for the cable to wear out & when it does can cause the pedal shaft splines to strip. Also, even if it looks new, if it was replaced with an aftermarket cheapy cable it could still be the source of your problems. Replace it with OEM or a high quality aftermarket part, not the cheap china made plastic lined cables you find in some stores.
Certainly possible it could be internal, but the cable is cheap & should be replaced anyway... so it won't hurt to try it first & go from there.
