Temp/Fuel gauges are pegged
« on: October 27, 2012, 08:10:37 PM »
I fired up the Sammy for the first time in a while (finally wrapping up my sound dampening project) and noticed that my fuel gauge quickly pegs, then is followed by the temp gauge as the engine starts to warm up.  This is a tach cluster I used to replace the non-tach cluster that came with the Sammy.  I don't remember it doing this when I first swapped instrument clusters but I wasn't really paying attention to those gauges on the first short drive after installation so it might have been like that from the start.

I put the old cluster back in and the gauges sit right where they should.  Anyone have a troubleshooting suggestion?

There are some really fine wires on the backside of the gauges (you have to remove the gauges from the cluster, to see them).  Those wires are probably broken.
From what I remember, the gauges share this wire and if it breaks, it will peg both gauges.

Bummer.  Hopefully, if that's the problem and it can be fixed, a patch won't throw off their calibration too much.  I'll wait to hear back from Trail Tough before I disassemble it.

Even though the wires are really small, fine wires, you can fix them.  I have fixed them before, using bigger wires and it doesn't seem to throw off the gauges.

Trail Tough's sending a replacement so I'm not gonna poke around inside.  They said this can happen when the fuel gauge goes bad.

Kudos to Trail Tough.  Not only did I get a replacement but a pre-paid return shipping label for the bad cluster.  Can't ask for better service than that!
