Broke another CV!

Broke another CV!

Like it said, I broke another CV.  This time it was the outter left.

Made for hard going in the deep wet snow we had today.

Can't wait to get my anvil and upgrade the whole front end.

Yep, the snow was so wet it was hard going.  Especally when first plowing a trail.

Did the rest of the day in 3 wheel drive.  It was very hard going.  Still was able to out wheel some of the Jeeps out there.  ;D

Luckily it was the outer left you broke. All you had to do is disconnect it from the 3-bolt flange, correct? Did you leave the shaft in the whole time, resting on the a-frame? Did you secure it to the a-arm and unlock the hub to keep it from moving? If you removed it, did you block the backside of the spindle to keep debri out?

When you drop in that Anvil, don't forget to get a steel 3rd member carrier, from a GV with a manual transmission, AND you will need to put a 10mm (I think) plug in the hole in the carrier, where the air line goes in (on a GV).

When the CV went it was just the cage.  The axil still stayed in the cup.  So I just let it flop around in there for the rest of the day.

And yes, when I go to the Anvil I'll get a steel third member and I'm also going to make up a set of Hagen Nisson type CV axils.  ;D

Sounds like a tougher cage would take
care of the broken CVs for the most part,
a few broken CV cups and shafts is all
that remains in the weak CV catagory.

I bet it's just not the cage's falt.  I bet the outter "cup" streches under pressure, so it gets loose in the CV joint, and then the cage blows apart.  Because really the cage does nothing but hold the bearings in place.

I wonder if you made a thick steel outter ring and weld it to the outside of the CV, how long it would last?

Then what break the inner CVs.  :-[ You cant move the stress off the inner cage if you wanted to.  :-/ I think you just need to upgrade the whole CV rather than just put a bandaid on it.
