Tiff-Tiff-Tiff goes the exhaust valve.
« on: December 23, 2003, 01:10:22 AM »
 :'(

It's been quietly nagging me for a couple of months.  Weird "lumpy" idle, smells rich at idle, slower (if possible!),  now after a 4 hour trip at wide open I can really hear it.

After a call to Hawk Strictly Suzuki (seem like good guys) I guess it's time for a head, Chiltons, and to tear into this thing.  I have a GMC Typhoon and a Buick Grand National so I'm not new to wrenching but the Zuki thing is foreign to me  Ya I know bad pun!!! ;D

Anyone with an aftermarket cam let me know if it's worth the $ to do.  I'll have it tore down so now is the time and I'm always looking for more HP but is there really a difference.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

And thanks to the site admin for this site,   I would be struggling even more and have  no info on Hawk with out it.

I went with the Insky torquer cam. To really benefit from a cam you need to help it by supplying better exhaust flow (mild porting, high flow cat, high flow muffler, headers) and intake flow(induction, filter, mild polishing around the intake valves, better carb)
I'm not saying you have to do all of these things but they all sure do help getting the most out of the engine.

Cheerp-Cheerp-Cheerp goes my post.  Did I say something wrong?  Someone here must have a cam,  do you like it?  Was it worth the $?

Thanks for the input 87 BlackSami;  I have a Cal-Mini header and 2" exhaust with no cat.  Stock coming in but I do plan on a snorkle after I fix the head,  but I'd really like to leave the factory FI alone if possible.  Port and polishing would be limited to a quick and easy cleanup with a dremel.  I have had only 1 carbed car in my life and it was a 72 Beetle (my first car) and at 32 years old my memory of carbs is really poor.

I'd love to find a 4.3 turbo for my Track but finding parts for the Ty is hard enough.  It's easier to mod the 3.8 in the GN,  a little alky injection-boost-tires-and cheap mods nets 12's all day.  The Buick motor is forgiving and when it does let go it's just headgaskets.  The 4.3 is a little more grumpy and when it lets go its rods shooting out.    The Ty's fun though and runs 13.60|removethispart|@98.8 stone stock.  The GN is a little faster with.................. let's just stop there.  Either way the only engine swap in my future would be a 3.3 (Buick's little brother to the 3.8 ) out of a 96 Skylark I have.  That's down the road awhile.

lil_truck,  I'm from Ionia 1/2 way between GR and Lansing.  I'm going to Whitehall on Sun for a little two tracking if you'd care to join in please feel free.  We will be meeting at the McDonalds on Colby Rd in Whitehall (a little north of Muskegon) at 9:00 A.M. Sun the 28th.  My Track is a 91 LSI with 3" body, 2" susp., header, 2" exhaust w/no cat, centerforce clutch, 29x11.5 SSR's, MT Classic II's, a rollbar fabbed into the rear seatbelt mounts and hoop, bumpers (Prerunner style in the front) built from 2 1/2" tube Front and Rear powdercoated,  and sprayed in Viper yellow Duraliner with very ugly black stripes I didn't do.  It has 54k org miles 20k of which were spent behind a motorhome.  I just can't believe the A/C blows ice cold!!!  It has scared just about everyone I know by going over things that make most rears pucker ;D.  Try http://www.michiganjeepers.com/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Board/UBB7/Number/521811/page/0/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1 for info on Sunday.
