locator pin and the sheet under the
ball, both replaced and it should shift
like new.

i understang the sheet under the ball but what about the locator pin. Is that inside the housing on top of the shifter. it looks like a pain to get in the top of the sidekick tranny. the samurai guys have it easy in this department. thanks for all the help.

To get at it from top side, take the center
plastic that's on the shifter off, remove the
4 bolts that hold on the rubber boot, and
remove the shifter (bayonet mount)
Catch the broken end of the shifter pin (bolt)
if it's still in there and remove the bolt that's
on the side of the shifter housing, replace
bolt and plastic sheet, replace all the parts

Or did I not understand your question ?

on my 90 tracker, I had the same problem, but it was not the locator pins. It was this plastic bushing that the ball on the end of the shifter sat in. What happens is after 15 years of sitting in gear oil and having stress on it, it stretches out and makes the shifter sloppy. I replaced mine and it made it way less sloppy, and it would actually go into gear, rather than flop side to side about 6" while in gear. After I replaced it, The shift knob will only move side to side about a half inch, which is pretty good. The place to get it is either at a chevy dealer or a suzuki dealer, and the plastic bushing runs about $7 to $8. ;D Awesomely cheap fix ;D

Be forewarned, as the chevy dealers can be just as bad as the suzuki dealer you just described, but it is worth a try. The reason I say this is because I went to the chevy dealer for the seatbelt recall and they told me that they didnt make the seatbelt replacements anymore, and it doesnt seem like they know much about Geo trackers, mostly because they have nothing in common with other chevys, and chevy dropped the geo name in 1998 so the people at the dealerships dont want to have to deal with these older geos. This might not be the case where you are, but it sure is where I live in northern california.

Hey Urban, I wouldn't take that at all from the Chevy Dealer.  I just had my 90 Tracker seat belt recall fixed last month.  Chevy replaced the whole seat belt system.  If you would like a copy of the parts order (they had to special order the parts), I would be more than happy to dig it up for you.  It shows the part numbers that Chevy used to replace the seat belt.  It might take me a little time because I'm in the process of moving and all of my stuff is in different boxes, but I should be able to find it.  If not, I will get a copy from the dealer.
