samurai randomly stopped running
« on: April 22, 2007, 02:35:34 PM »
recently just got it. had been driving it for quite a bit. i just finished the lincoln lockers and snorkel, so i went to take it for its first offroad adventure. it was doing amazing. i was in water to the seat driving around for about 20 minutes. then i got stuck in that deep of water. as i was waiting to get pulled how, i was keeping a steady throttle in order to keep it running because the exhaust was under water. then i decided to let off and see if it would run. so i did so, and it still ran.

it was idling for about 8 minutes or so. then it just shut off out of no where. instantly, as if i just took the key out. my friends convinced me to try to start it with the exhaust under the water. so i tried that, it didn't work.
after i got pulled out, we tried pull starting it several times. if i was lucky, it would run, but with a VERY low idle and if i gave it any gas it would stall. and most of the time it wouldn't even do that.

when i got home we checked the carburator, it looked as if dirty water had passed through. which i couldn't believe because my snorkel was sealed. so idk about that.

we noticed the spark was real bad. so we replaced the spark plugs, coil, distributor cap and wires. didn't help. so we figued it's because of bad fuel. well i sprayed starter fluid in each cylcinder and tried to crank it and i didn't even get a combustion out of it. i don't know much about spark, maybe its not strong enough. so i decided to check grounds.

battery connectors were corroded to hell. so i replaced those, and tightened the motor ground. i check the power cable to the starter. its good, too.

help me. please.

Pull the ecm or computer out of it and see if it got wet.

If it has the stock carb it is a feed back type carb that will use an ecm with the o2 sensor to adjust the fuel and there is also an altitude sensor on the fire wall, you could have taken out the 02 sensor in the water also, does your engine light work?

no, Turn on the ignition and look at your gage pannel and look for a red light that says engine, if it does not light up pull the speedo cluster out and change the bulb and get it to work, if you get a book it will show you how to put a fuse in the fuse block and run computer codes to check the ecm out.

ECM is on passenger side under dash... if its wet its probally shot, if your samurai is carbed then I have a good ecm I can get ya for cheap.

yes, it's carbed. and it didn't get wet.

my new theory is that something is still bad with spark. i mean, it sparks, but maybe not precisely on time. Not due to timing, just due to the distributor. i've already replaced the cap, but maybe its the hunk of metal that connects to the motor? plus it looks at wet/oily around it.
