Who Makes My Sami 2-Piece Hardtop?
« on: May 11, 2011, 10:30:16 PM »
Hi all,
I just got this Samurai with this hardtop on it. It is 2-piece with a seperate removable front section. I suspect it is an aftermarket one. I haven't been able to find a match on google. Notice the unusual rear window shape. Does anyone know who makes it and if they are still in business or where I can get parts for it? It's in pretty good shape, but it needs some rehab. Some of the weatherstripping needs replaced. I may be able to find that generically. But it also has a couple broken latches. I'd like to replace them. Any info anyone has would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Shawn

I believe Guidon made those both for Suzuki dealers and the aftermarket here in the US.  They were probably the most common hardtop available until the late 80s when they stopped making them.  I think the biggest downside is that the side windows are lexan and get scratched by brush fairly easily.  Some of them had the rear glass attached to the tailgate instead of hinged to the top-kind of hokey.

For latches, I would check Grainger.
35 years of Samurai ownership, and I still have my very first one. :)

i have a back half like that and the rear window swings on the tail gate mine has a Suzuki S molded right in the rubber by the plastic piece on the targa bar. I was told it was from the 90's wish i still had the front half i got hit by a big gust of window the freeway one morning and off it went one of the hooks broke

I have a Guidon top made in 2000 at a franchise  plant in Paola, KS. They sitll had the molds, but only a couple of old hands remembered how to mount one. I'm sure it was the last one made at that location, as they went out of business soon after.

My side windows are 2-piece, sliding glass; & back hatch is hinged to top. I don't know IF Guidon made variations other than a half-cab with deck over back end.

I think Grainger's is a good place to start. Seems as though I've seen better mounting hardware than what came on mine. I'm sure there were lots of types used.

I may have the same top.  I do NOT know a brand.  No stickers, tags, embossed verbage or numbers.  It came w/ an '88 Sami I purchased a few years back.
