tail shaft on its way out????

tail shaft on its way out????

are there any known common problems with the Vitara/Sidekick tail shafts? more so rear?

i've got a clicking when ever force is transfered initially in either forward or reverse.

i've got it down the being either the rear diff, or rear tail shaft, and its everytime i drive it now. everything looks 'normal' underneath, but was wondering if it was the UNI joints in the tailshaft.

I had this problem too and solved it by changing the old u-joints and going with greaseable ones. ~ CZ

I  would bet it's old dried up U joints too ;)

If it's not U joint related and you've been playing in water and not checking your diff oils  ???, It could be a collapsed pinion bearing as well.

I swapped out a GQ Patrol  rear LSD the other week for a guy who hadn't changed his diff oil (which was like cream cheese :o) after water wheeling just because he didn't want to invest the $30 in  oil, ended up costing $475 in the end and thats with no  labor.

Hell, even if it's not U-joints (which it probably is) you'll probably want to replace those anyway if you haven't done so in a while. U-joints popping out while you're driving down the road is no treat, trust me :-X

OK, now that i have a set on new uni's, greasable ones at that!, how the heck do i get the old ones out, and the new ones in?

sometimes i just wish i had a shop manual for stuff like this.

Take it to a machine shop (automotive)
and have it done, unless you feel like
buying an H frame press to press them
out, if you try to do the hammer method,
you might just mess up the yokes
