t case removal

96 tracker- 5 speed manual. It appears that the trans shifter is attatched to the top of the transfer case, anyone know if that is correct? can the transfer case come out without dropping the transmission? I am sure there is one more bolt at the top of the transfer case that needs to come out but I think it is under the transmission shifter- anyone have experience with this?

You have to pull the transmission shifter housing off to get to that extra top transfer case bolt. After you remove it throw it away and you won't have to remove trans shifter again to remove transfer case. It can all be done in the car but getting the shifter housing bolts might be a little hard on your language.

thanks, it looks like there are three bolts holding it on- one at the back of the shifter which looks like a straight shot down from the hole in the floor tunnel, and one on each side of the front of the shifter- do you remember if that is all?

There are 5.  Four at the front of the shifter tower (where you think there are 2) and the one at the back of the shifter tower, that goes down into the top of the tcase.
Very difficult, if not impossible, to remove all 5 shift tower bolts with the tranny still on the engine.

the one time i had to, i dropped the rear mount to lower the t-case enough to get to the bolts. long handles ratchet wrenches are a big help.

Yeah, I figured that would be the absolute minimum you would have to do, in order to get the bolts out.
