Panhard bar drop bracket -- Need a Fabricator
« on: August 22, 2008, 08:22:54 AM »
As I've mentioned a lot in the past, the only loose string remaining from my XL-7 into SWB swap is that the rear end is offset about 3/4 of an inch toward the driver's side.  Visually, this makes a 1-1/2" difference when comparing the inset right wheel with the outset left wheel, and when flexing there are occasional spring-sproingy sounds as the rear coils can't sit completely squarely in their seats.  I'm finally sick of it.

The cause was that, while both the XL and the Tracker had the same length Panhard bars, the frame of the XL was slightly wider in the back, meaning the mount on the axle was shifted slightly more toward center.  Now that it's on my truck with the slightly narrower frame, hello offset.

The options for fixes are:

1) Add a bend or two to the bar to make it 3/4" shorter, end-to-end.
-- This would work, but I really don't want to weaken the bar like that.  Out.

2) Move the mount on the axle.
-- That's a lot of grinding and welding for a 3/4" move.  And a total pain in the ass.  And I'd have to fnd someone to do it.

3) Shorten the bar by cutting, sleeving and welding.
-- This has been my intent, but it turns out just to be enough of a hassle (especially since I don't weld) that I haven't gotten it done yet.

OR....

4) Have someone fabricate a drop (and, in my case, extension) bracket for the Panhard bar's frame-mount.

This would kill two birds with one stone.  Here's a quick drawing of one style, which inserts and is bolted into the existing mount.  It might actually be easier to make one that is bolted on completely external to the existing mount, which would also simply require grinding off the bottom lip of the stock mount (I'll attach a photo of the stock mount as it exists in the car later).

Frankly, everyone who's added 2-3 inches to their rear suspension could stand a little leveling of the Panhard bar, as that reduces side-to-side movement as you're suspension works driving down the road.

Yep, seen that before.  Won't work for me, though.
