Hello all,

I have a 1992 Samurai I've had for a few years.  It doesn't get driven a lot because of no A/C (I'm in Georgia) but I miss it this time of year.  Last spring I was driving it and it started to hesitate really bad on me, like there was a clogged catalitic or a fuel problem.  Replaced the filter and check the exhaust and it was fine, but then when we tried to start it- no fire.  Replaced all the plugs, wires, rotor cap, etc. and eventually went up the line and replaced the ignition coil (even though it tested OK with the meter).  Still no fire.   The igniter and ignition coil are getting 12v, as is the pickup.  The other parts in the rotor are not broken and they turn fine.

The only things left that I can see are the igniter or the pickup coil, neither of which can be tested, apparently.  Both the service manuals I have say the "hall effect" igniter and pickup can't be easily tested by the home mechanic.  My mechanic friend who is helping me said the only way they could test it is subbing parts and they don't stock them.

So... the problem is, the igniter for this is impossible to find unless you want to spend over $300, it seems, and I'm not sure that's the problem.  Can any other igniters be subbed for the 1992 Sammy?   Geo Tracker or something that was more popular at the time?  The junk yards and part stores act like a fuel-injected Samurai hardly existed.

the tracker and sammy motors and fuel injection should be the same unless your sammy came from the spain plant
the hall effect style the easiest way to tes if it is no good is if your buddy has a distributor just swap them and see if yours will fire if not then that is not the problem.

I don't know anybody with a Samurai to try this.

you can take the dist out and take it to a shop that has a digital graphing meter (snap-on vantage) and they can bench test the dist.

Their is a guy named Ken, screen name Surly, over at www.zuwharrie.com that repairs EFI ECM's. He will test it, repair it, and then retest, and ship for a very reasonable price.

I would send it out, and have it checked. 

Hello rittwage , I am in rochelle ga and have a fuel inj, samuria. Mine will run for a while but the longer it runs, it starts to cut off intermittinly, as it warms up. After a while it will not fire at the coil(as when you have wire pulled out app 1/2 inch it will run that way, but when it shuts off it will not spark jump while tunring starter). After a while it will run again then shut off again. I am getting 12 volts at connector that pulgs into coil from module. Can you help tell me how to tell if this is coil going bad or module, coil does not feel very hot to touch as it is cutting off. PS< runs good until this starts again? thank you maddog256

I've fixed a couple injected Samurais and 8v throttle body Swifts over the years with exactly that issue... The distributor on them is also a cam sensor. They go bad. Period. I bet if you get a new distributor you will be a happy Zuker again...
