The Reason for Upgrade paths.
« on: April 12, 2006, 12:52:14 PM »
Almost every modification comes with a story or at least an interesting reason.  What led to the various upgrades on your wheeler?

I'll start with my SJ-410

The SJ was bought so I would have something to wheel heavily in place of the YJ without breaking the bank.  I chose the Sammy because a couple club owners did pretty well with theirs, and I had no idea about the differences between the SJ-410 and the 413's.

The planned 31s turned into 33s because I got a good deal from someone upgrading to 36s.
Bright Blue Plastic Seats, because they rock and the originals were all ripped up and had metal poking bits in them.  :)
5.12 Tracker gears were bought because I was told they would swap directly into a samurai...
Then the axels was swapped out for a Sammy front end and Hybrid Rear in order to handle the new gears.
Spool in the rear and a Detroit Ez-Locker up front because I had the gears out.
Then a 6.5:1 transfer case was put in because the gears alone were not low enough to turn the 33s very well....
9000lb winch was put in instead of an 8000 because my neighbor sold it to me cheap, and a new bumper to handle the 9000.  Then a new rear bumper to match the front one.
Roll cage was installed for Moab, as I was told I would be foolish to run without one on the rocks.
RUF conversion because my front springs were slightly concaved and I kept rubbing against the rear fender well, Folding Shackles made because it sounded like a cool idea and made the RUF conversion easier
Bulletproof Tansfer case mounts because I ripped the previous ones in two when my front end gave out in Rimrock and I had to drive out in 2wd.  But people were impressed I was doing so well in 2wd.  :D
Sleeved the Hybrid Rear with 3/8 Tubing due to ripping the tube open in an attempt to peel the spring perches off while driving out of Rimrock due to spring wrap.
New rear springs, as I s-curved the old ones.
Drilled holes in the bottom of the plastic seats, because I finally became tired of the water pooling up...
Calmini Heavy Duty Axel shafts because I twisted the splines on the previous ones, which is what helped blow up my from Detroit EZ-Locker.  The second time anyway.
ARB Air Locker in the front end because I was tired of blowing up the EZ-Locker.   :P

And that is where she sits now.  Awaiting a track bar before the serious wheeling starts back up so I don't rip apart my rear end again.  :D
