Shocks how much longer?
« on: October 31, 2003, 11:02:36 PM »
I went to the parts store with my old shock , and they looked up all the part #s with my size of holes and width , and got me a shock thats about three inches longer , is this long enough ?
Oh yeah I have an 87 Sami with a 6 inch RRO SPOA new rear shock mount (so far) have new fronts but dont have them on yet .

That should be sufficient.  A shock that is 3" longer compressed will give you close to 6" longer fully extended. With a 3" longer shock, the shock barrel is 3" longer and the shock strut is also 3" longer.  What brand of shocks did you get.  I have a set of the Doetsch Tech's on my Sammy and they work great!  Got mine from Rocky Road at the same time I did the SOA on my truck.

I've driven my Sammy without shocks while I was in the process of putting in the lift.  NOT FUN!!!!  You definitely need them.

Only ways to improve a Sammy's ride are to go with very soft shock rates, and lower your tire pressure.  You can run your tires down to 20PSI safely.  That's the recommended pressure on the label inside your door.  That will help your ride out.

Changing to a YJ spring will also help the ride, but it makes it a little less road friendly because of the flexibility.

I put my shocks on yesterday , they were almost a perfect size befoe I took the band off to keep it compressed ,  I had to compress it about 1/4 of an inch to get it on the mount , in theory thats exactly where middle should be right ? so I think I made a good choice ..
