Suzuki Swift GTi DOHC cylinder head
« on: October 30, 2003, 09:38:19 AM »
Anybody ever take the DOHC cylinder head off a 1989-1994 Suzuki Swift GTi, and stick it on a 1.6 Sidekick block?

Different motor family, it might work, but
why not use a 1.6 16V head on a 1.6 Block.

The pistons need to have valve recesses so
they don't hit the pistons, also the 1.3 motor
sits across the engine bay, the distributor sits
the wrong way, pointing out it will hit the firewall
on the kick or the sammy for that mater.

A 1.6 16V head is less work, but if the price
is right for the other parts......Hey have a ball.

Yep, it's been done. Brent [Trail Tough] did that with Rick [Hawk Strictly Suzuki] back in the day. Custom flat top pistons too... Pretty hot motor set up and he could really pull away in the rallying. However, Brent told me just a few months ago that he feels that the 1.6 16v engine runs better.

The ssgti.com site has some tips on doing this.

Thanks.  I didn't know if it was a common swap or the you-could-but-why-would-you kind.  I agree the SOHC 16 valve head makes way more sense and that's the one I have now.  The only reason to switch to the DOHC head would be to mount up a Swift GT turbocharger system.  Thanks for the GTi link.  I didn't know there was much of an aftermarket for these little pocket rockets.

I guess I'll figure out some other interesting engine swap.

I heard that the 1.6 16 V head on the 1.3L short block produces a screamer of a motor.  Anyone know this for fact?

I know the 1.6L 8V top end added to the 1.3L short, with a mid range cam is got a lot of go-go.

Has anyone done any cam work on the SOHC 16v for more torque?
