Birfield or not to Birfield that is the question

Birfield or not to Birfield that is the question

I have been told, I should install a birfield eliminator kit on my 87 Sammy, if I want to serious crawling. If I do need to change, who makes the eliminator kit? Any thoughts on this?

My question would be... how large of a tire are you planning on going? A 32" tire or smaller will be fine with serviced birfields on any terrain. If you plan on going larger, yes the birfield may be a problem but the real problem will be the splines stuck in your third members on the trails when they explode.

Thanks for the insight. I won't worry about replacing them, I will just rebuild them as a safty precaution. I bought the Sammy for $300.
I am new to the Suzuki configuration. I usually hang with Xterras and Land rovers. The Suzuki built right will have advantages over them.

Serious advantages! We were wheeling with an xterra this last weekend with all the goodies you can get for one right now and I have to say I'm under impressed. A 4-door Kick with the 6" combo would drive circles around it.

Before I put new 32's on my Sammy, I had run quite a few times at Paragon on my stock birfields without detonating one.  Last time out we ran Rattler (Black 1 Rating) in the rain and put a LOT of stress on the drivetrain, and they held up fine.   Haven't had a chance to wheel it hard since I got the 32's, but from all I have read and seen, if you stay at 32's or under, the stock birfields will hold up.  

Oh yeah, btw, a well built Zuk will run circles around most vehicles offroad.  Biggest drawback is the extremely short wheelbase which can make for some interesting wheel stands on the steep stuff.  I've found that my Zuk on 31's was able to outperform several other heavily modified vehicle on 35's when it came to crawling.

my tyres measure 32.25 inches and ive torn up both front and rear the rear is popping real loud when i get on it on pavement :o so it looks like im gonna waiy for tax time and just buy a set of axels from trail tough....

hoprfully i wont be able to break them too quickly :P
