Samurai Automatic Swap

Hello All,

I am looking to convert one of my samurai's to automatic.

I have:

1)1988 white Hardtop with 69000 orig miles, weber, spoa, BFG 31x10x15, crossover steering and a full set of rancho 5123s including the steering stablizer.



2)1988.5 convt with 77000 orig miles and a little rust. (no pics yet)

I would like to convert #2 to auto can someone please help or guide me in the right direction. I searched for this info for a few days and cannot find anything at all.

You need an early auto, I have an 89'
with an auto, I don't know if a 90 has
the non electronic control.

I do know where there is an 89' in a
wrecking yard, I wanted that trans so
I'll have a spare, along with the T-case,
You think you might want it ???

You also need to lift the body, I don't
know how much, but the Trans tunnel is
too small, so the wider Auto Trans won't
fit without a lift and a BFH to knock out
the skinny spots.

You will need to combine the 2 different
drive shafts, both front and rear because
the Sammy has flanges, and the Kick has
slip yokes, oh, and you need to swap to
a 1.6L motor or use an adapter the mate
the 1.3L to the Auto Trans

And you will need the shifter from and
auto too so you have a way to change
the gears

That's the bulk of it, of coarse you
will need to convert trans/motor mounts
and stuff like that.

If I were going through all of this work,
I would (funds permitting) get a 1.6L
16V auto running complete, and swap
the EFI, Computer, and parts over to
make it a total retro, and a bad 16V hotrod
to boot

Do you know who sells the Adapter plate for the sidekick trans to the sammy engine?

If I were to go with the 1.6l swap, would I take the Engine. Trans. Transfer Case, Drive Shafts, brake lever/cage and shifter from the doner kick?

Can you direct me to a site with this info? Will the full running gear set match up with the sammy's yokes?

It's not the ringer it's the lucky 13

You need to do the fabrication, or pay
someone to do it, I don't know of any
bolt in setups

The sammy U-joints are the same as the Kick,
so you can swap ends on the shafts, but the
length is probably different, I don't know how
much tho, they might even be compairable in
length and need no mods

Bellhousing should be the same, you
would need the flex plate and the torque
convertor too, but should work together.

Most guys don't like/want the auto for
wheelin, I like mine, but there have been
some reported problems with failures and
leaking fluid

I think this is your best option to fit a 1.3 behind
a 1.6 Auto trans, and is probably the only option
that is available

I have seen in the past auto trans spilt and leak when torqued due to bad motor mounts and bad transmission mounts, but when they are put together properly there should be no prob.

Like I said it's for the wifey that is just going to work and back. I wont touch it, I'd probably kill it if I play with it.

The white one is mine and I'm going to sell it soon. ( I want a pre 74 K5 Blazer again. )

How about a Sidekick or Tracker
with an Auto in it allready, that
would be more cost effective and
a lot quicker, as winter is a comeing

I wouldn't go through this much work
if I wasn't doing this for wheelin, like
the Turbo Mod, lots of work, but that's
what I wanted.

For a 4x4 wife hauler for a DD, a factory
built Auto would be more reliable, espesially
if somthing were to break on the road

I have an auto in my sami and I love it. The easiest way to install one is to use the Kicker3 but it cost like $600. Below is a pic of an automatic pressure plate on the back of a 1.3. It is a larger diameter than the sami flywheel and you can see how close it comes to the lower bolt holes and its wider than the block at thr 10:00 and 2:00 positions. If it all bolts together its gonna be close
