Burning oil
« on: March 15, 2009, 08:52:14 AM »
My 93 Geo was supposedly rebuilt last year by the guy I bought it from. But, it smokes and burns oil pretty bad. Besides rings and valve stem guides is there some other seal or something that could make it burn this much oil. Also where is the best place to purchase a rebuilt motor or used motor with low miles? ???

Valve guide seals commonly go out. They're the cheapest of the my-engine's-burning-oil fixes, and common for them to go out. A google search will come up with a lot of good ways to change them. My favorite method includes a rented spring compressor from auto-zone, and pulling spark plugs & stuffing them with small rope (this will make sense to you after you find pics of the method). It's my understanding the 8v is easy, and the 16v is a PITA.

I'm sure some of the vendors/sponsers of this site offer them as well.
