New Zuk Sam ('88) - Got 2H, 4H, no 4L
« on: August 28, 2007, 08:53:46 PM »
As the subject says, all seems to work well, except I can't get into 4L.

If I push forward hard, and slowly let the clutch out, I can grind the gears a little.  So, I know it's there, I just can't get into it...

Could this be as easy as the infamous Transfer Case Sheet?

just pull up on the shifter real hard while shifting and see if it goes.

Just a quick follow up for those interested.

I ordered the sheet from Rocky-Road.com.  Man, are they slow.  I ordered on 8/28, and it's still not here.

I got impatient, so I went to a local dealer, and bought one for $8.  It was a very easy install as everyone here mentioned.  There was one little thing that I haven't seen mentioned.  Everyone says to clean out the area where the sheet goes very well.  The problem with that is the gunk can all fall into the transfer case as you clean it out.  So, I hooked up a small pipe to my shop-vac with some good 'ol duct tape, and sucked out the old ground up sheet, no problem!

So, now I'm shifting smoothly into 2H, 4H and 4L just fine.  It BARELY gets into 4L before the shifter hits the body of the car, but it still goes in fine.

Thanks for the ideas, and a great forum!

My SJ had the problem of the body being in the way.  A few moments with a dremel fixed that problem right up.  :)
