speedo doesnt work on my 84 sj410, just wondering how to fix it

i pulled the cable off at the t-case, spun it by hand and the gauge worked

after jacking the rear wheels up, and shifting through gears while running it, i noticed the little shaft in the t-case doesnt turn

could this have come disengaged? broken?
and is it hard or easy to fix...

just wondering if anyone has any experience on this

nothin? im sure a few of u have taken ur t-case apart and have a small idea of how this thing works

I avoid speedos at all costs. When I was stationed on Guam, all the Japanese men wore speedos, that was 95, I STILL have nightmares.
P.S. I know he means speedometer

i dont want to poke around mine unless i know what im doing

I've never messed with one in a Zuk. The one I did mess with had a small gear type thing (where the cable went in) that could be unbolted and replaced.

Possibly replace the speedo gear at the t-case.

Loosen up the screw, take a good set of vice-grip plyers and twist out the little collar that holds the speedo gear inplace,
inspect.

It might be that the plastic teath on the output shaft are stripped, or the speedo gear itself is damaged.

this screw goes through the gear?
after i remove the speedo cable, i can see the little deally that SHOULD be spinning inside there... so is that held on with a screw or what?
the screw youre talking about might be the one that holds the cable into the t-case

major question is what holds that gear (thing that spins and engages with cable)  in place?
a clip, screw, or something that i have to split the t-case to pieces to get at?

I haven't had the speed o drive gear out of mine. Its not expalined in any great deal in the FSM. Like Nate says, there is a screw/bolt near where the cable goes in. It should be faorly obvious, if its not i can get you send a scan of the relevant FSM pages.

Remove the bolt that holds the cable, completely.

Then the metal collar (casing) should be able to be spun/pulled out with the tiny gear on the end.  

You may need to use some vicegrips clamped on the metal collar (not the tab inside) and tap it with a hammer.  Use a twisting motion when you try to free it.

Ours slipped right out after breaking the gunk (oil, dirt, etc) free.

Yup,

take out the bolt, and then the cable seen in this picture, and grab onto the collar that is shown with a pair of plyers or vice grips like shown, twist and pull.
