INVERTED SHOCKS????
« on: January 23, 2012, 01:41:00 PM »
Maybe someone can help me out with this question as I am new to 4 wheeling and rock climbing.  What is the difference in installing shocks with the body of the shock mounted on the bottom and it inverted and mounted on top?  I see so many different pictures with it done different.  Does it have a different benefit when it is installed upside down?  Please advise...

Having the main body attached to the chassis rather than the axle reduces the unsprung weight and should help handling. It may also help with clearance issues, like on a Track/Kick where a large diameter body at the axle end fouls on the axle. Shocks are only designd to run one way up though so you have to get the right ones.

Thanks....so what are the right one's to run inverted?  MONOTUBE???  I have 33's on it now and I and looking to put 34's or 35's and lift it more.  The guy I bought it from said it has a 4" suspension and 2" body lift.  I see the body lift but how can I tell about the SPOA lift, if it is 4"?  What leaf springs are best to use for 4"?  I saw old man emu 4" springs and I hear people say YJ springs?

Depending on the shock manufacturer and type of shock. Some shocks will not work properly upside down because of the  valving.

With out knowing what the valving is and if its not 50/50 you cant turn them over , it will reverse the compression and rebound.
Most shocks are 35/65 or so.

Would you care to explain that - regardless of which way is up compression is compression (the piston moves into the shock), rebound is rebound (the piston moves out of the shock).

I can understand the shock not working when inverted - if - as an example - a valve in what would have been the foot of the shock and immersed in oil, is now at the top and surrounded by nitrogen - but - compression is compression and rebound is rebound any way you mount the shock - even if it's horizontal - not that I expect it to work horizontal.

I think it would be best to check with the manufacter if you want to run them one way and aren't sure if it's ok. I have run bilstiens (not on a Suzuki) and always shaft side down, the 5150's say what side up but the 5125's don't specify, the writing is right side up with shafts down though. Some run the 5125's body down with no I'll effects.  If you use shock boots having the shaft side up can allow water, mud and dirt to get trapped in the boot and sit on the shaft seal/wipe, probably not good.

Your spoa lift gives around 4" with stock springs, im not sure adding 4" lifted springs on top of that is good or nesasarry. You already have a 2" body lift so I would think a 2" lift spring would be fine. Maybe someone with that size tire will chime in with some advise.

I'm not sure what the advantage to inverted shocks would be. If I was going to do it I'd check with the manufacturer first.
As to your liftyou have 6" now  (SPOA with stock springs and a 2" body lift.) Perfect for 33s. That is if it was regeard for the added tire height.
If you go to an arched lift spring it will cost in the articulation department , since flat springs articulate much better than arched springs when a SPOA lift is utilized...So to gain the tire size you THINK you need -----you must re spring , re gear , re shock ,
possibly re brake line , extend your drivelines , extend your track bar.......etc. etc. etc....
IMO a Samurai with 6" of lift (done right) and 33s is the perfect set up for all but the most extreme wheeling....
If you are new to the offroad seen take some advice from someone who is not new to the seen . Stick with the lift and tire size you have while working on refining your Samurai in other ways...
Here is a picture of mine for reference. SPOA -  1" body - 1" shackle - 33x12.50x15 -  long travail shocks (hydraulic)..Have fun....Boxcar...
