Buying Used/Rebuilt/New Engines
« on: August 27, 2009, 09:17:52 PM »
Where is the best place that you guys have found to buy new engines. My buddy and I bought a 88 Samurai today for $200. The current engine has a crack in the block. We both know enough to swap the engine. We just want to go the cheapest route we can obviously. We arent rich and both have other rigs. This is more of a hunting/trail rig. Everything else is included in the truck. Really we only need a new block if anyone knows where to find one for relatively cheap but if someone could let me know a good place to look for an engine online that would be great! Thanks

post where you are from...I've got a few good engines right now but I'm on the east coast. You can also post your budget. I sold one engine last month for $75...this one was as is where is.....another one went for $400 but this one was sure to run good.

The warranty is very simple....put the motor in and call me when you are working on it...I show up before they turn the key and make sure that they have done their work right. If something is not done right then I walk away. If they start it and it smokes or looses coolant then the cash is returned when I get the motor back. I've never had one motor come back. I don't offer warranty with all motors. Some people only want to spend $75 and a motor of that price is only worth that much.

I check the cylinders/valves and all the parts with the camera and get a good idea on setting a price. I've also bought some motors from Japan Auto in Ontario that are under 50K and at a decent price. We've never had a bad one but I've heard of people having a hard time when some.

Once in a while I find them with the craddle on the bottom crank bearings....this is in all the swift DOHC motors and these motors can rev. If you get a stock 1.3 with the craddle...keep it. It will love to rev.

you can also buy a 1.6 block along with an adapter kit from one of the vendors.  Just slap the 1.3 head on the block and install it.  Later, you can add a my-side carb (or switch to 1.6 FI - save the harness intake, ecm and fuel tank!), thorley header, etc, as money is available.

Or you can just do a complete 1.6 transplant.
