soft top pads
« on: September 04, 2008, 08:09:53 AM »
I'm getting ready to put a soft top on my 1986 Samurai.
The vehicle did not have a top when I bought it this spring.
My question is about the pads and cushions associated with the top.
I think there should be:
  • a pad for the top targa bar
a pad for the roll bar
pads for the upper door frame between the targa and windshield
pads for the top bars that go between the targa and windshield
pad for the rear bow top
pads for the rear bow sides
Man, that's a lot of pads!
Where does a person get these pads if they no longer have originals?
Are these all necessary?
Has anyone built there own pads?
By the way, I bought a Bestop "replace-a-top" kit that doesn't really discuss these pads in the instructions.
Thanks!

I would give Hawk Suzuki a call, they should be able to hook you up with everything you need.

I just tossed out the pad on top of the Targa bar to...
I don't think there is a pad on the roll bar.
The door frame pads I might have, but I would need to find my door frame bars.  Haven't used them in years...
The spreader bars do have pads, my SJ didn't come with them.  If you put a roll cage in you won't need those anyway.

On my old Jeep YJ I just used a piece of pipe insulation for padding.  It's cheap and easy, and will probably work until you get the nice factory replacements.

I think there should be:
a pad for the top targa bar---yes
a pad for the roll bar---yes
pads for the upper door frame between the targa and windshield---yes
pads for the top bars that go between the targa and windshield---yes
pad for the rear bow top---no.
pads for the rear bow sides---no.  there is very thin foam like stuff covered with thin vinyl type stuff on the sides.  But it is glued to the bar, so no way to transfer it from one bar to another, without destroying it.  I am not sure that all bars have this....I have some bars that have it and others that don't....so I don't know if some have had it removed, or if they just never had it.
Man, that's a lot of pads!
Where does a person get these pads if they no longer have originals?  ---Find someone that has removed them.
Are these all necessary?---no.  Although some do keep the top from rubbing on stuff and possibly developing holes from wear.
Has anyone built there own pads?
By the way, I bought a Bestop "replace-a-top" kit that doesn't really discuss these pads in the instructions.
