Snorkle questions
« on: December 01, 2004, 05:18:41 AM »
Well, the other day while out wheeling I came across a rather large mud/water crossing and got some in my air box. I am looking at the type of snorkle that could also act as a cold air/ ram effect type. Has any one used one and what are pros and cons. I would like to buy one but I dont really like the hokey looking home made jobs :-/

thanks in advance,
 Kevin

tHE ONLY ONES THAT I KNOW ABOUT ARE THE SAFARI SNORKEL. BUT THEY DON'T ACT AS A RAM AIR UNLESS YOUR DRIVING FAST. WHAT I DID WAS I ADDED A TORNADO FAN.  I COULDN'T TELL IF THE FAN DOESN'T ANY THING BECAUSE I DID ALL MY MODS AT THE SAME TIME. iF YOU NEED PICTURES, YOU KNOW HOW TO FIND ME, PIERRE

Ya, the safari snorkle. Do you use your stock
air box? If so I'll need to get one of those too.

Yes you use the stock air box.  You have to drill a large hole in your fender to install it so be aware of that.

I am thinking of getting one.  Not because I go through much deep water, but because I think they look cool.  :D

I think that with it getting cold air the preformance will increase. Is safari the only one they make?

    thanks

I run a Safari snorkel on mine. Yes they work well in keeping the water out, already given it a good work out with multiple hood deep river crossings. You will get a small amount of induction noise though I don't notice it with the windows up. It will give you cooler air but I don't feel that it has improved performance in any real way. For really dusty conditions there are additional foam pre-filters that can be installed in the the top. The install was easy enough.

I don't think the homemade ones have to look bad, you just have to use black ABS instead of PVC.

Mine cost me around $50 and thats including the $20 to buy the 2"3/4" hole saw drill bit to make the hole.

The Safari ones will be over $300 with shipping so to me it would have to look 6 times better....

I'll take the less asthetically pleasing homemade version over a $200 snorkel ;D

Explosivo, I was wondering about the filter set-up like yours. Doesn't it get wet and make the carb run like it's on the choke ( remember my bikes with K&N's running bad in the rain due to wet filters ).

I asked around for the Cyclone filtercaps like the Landrover Defender run and they are about 40 Euro's ( so just over $ 40,-  ) so that might be a good alternative. I'm going to have the pipe running from the filterbox to the windowsill bent by someone that makes exhausts.  Any thought on pipe diameter ? Air-entrance in the original filterbox is very small, so 2 "pipe should suffice ?

Jip, I think 2" should be enough. I have about 3" on my Vitara (home made too  ;D). Solved the filter problem in an other way, bought an Green Twister Air Filter (wich is in a housing) and connected the snorkel to that. On top of the pipe I made a cup to keep the water out. Will post some pic's when I get home.

I never had any problems with a genuine oiled K&N, some of the copies were rubbish though even when oiled. I used to carry a screwdriver with me to take the filters off when it rained.

I like my safari Snorkel, its a good fit, doesn't block your vision and its very strong. You could probably drive over it without damaging it. There are two types though, they are different lengths where they come through the fender - you have to get the right one for your airbox. I guessed wrong had to make an adapter for mine.
