zuktoy started project
« on: October 22, 2006, 06:53:39 PM »
some of you know that im putting a compleat toyota drivetrain into a sidekick so ive started the install after compleatly rebuilding a 22re with a higer lift cam and shaved the head and block for moore compreshion. i got a short L52 trans. t case doubler kit from advanced adapters for a final low gear of 5.6 to 1. i spent all day making it sit in its fonal position on its moter mounts. i didnt have to do any welding just a little drilling. i used the toyota moter mount brackets. some 3/8 steel plate. the sidekicks moter mounts and the brackets that mount to the frame. it was great to use parts i already had. the passanger moter mount was easy it just bolts together and moving the block bracket back in the supras bolt holes. hears a pick.

the driver side was much harder it took a little drilling and modifying and spacing to get the placement right. it took about 4 hours to get it in thr right place. the raidiater will have to be moved up about 1 inch and a high flow electric fan on the frount of the raidiator because the fan will not fit. but thats ok. the 2.4 will be awsum. anyway hears a pick of the driver side m,m.

I put a 20r in my sami wound up going all toy underneath. Runs great in hindsight I would go with a 4.3 vortech not as long and able to produce gobs of power.
when in doubt gas it!!

used a  clutch pedal out of a T100 and don't forget the radiator. When you put the trans. crossmember in what we did is  used a stck one from a toy cut it to width and welded plates to the sides so we could drill holes in the frame to hold it up.
when in doubt gas it!!

Ok I may be missing somthing....
Why are you using a non zuk engine?  I know its a 22r, with lots of aftermarket stuff, but to start out with somthing a little more hp then the stock 16v. Can't you go to a 1.8 or 2.0 zuk engine with less modifications? Or soup the 16v just as much or by going with a turbo? Since you are changeing engine brands, Toyota has a 4banger tacoma engine with 150 to 175 hp, wouldnt that be a better powerplant to start with since you are changing everything around to fit the 22r anyway?  I have been thinking (I know that is dangerous) about this for while, so I am courious.  I saw a 22r crate engine online that 125 hp.  That seems like a lot of trouble for such a little hp gain, especially compared to a stock 1.8 zuk, which has 120 hp.
Just asking and wanting to learn thats all.

Its not about HP its about TQ....

On another note there is a lot less wiring trouble going with a carbed motor such as a 22r  than there is swapping in a late model ZUK motor

Why ; Toy parts are cheaper the after market is there and the stuff last longer. For instance the clutch is at least three times larger so when you put bigger tires on it , it is not going to burn the clutch up the first mud hole you hit. A  4.3 vortech would be a great motor for the swap it is not as long one less cylinder forward and all that. But with all that said you put a couple side draft webers and a LC engineering stage 3 head and you will be amazed at the amount of hp the toy will produce

ok its not a 22r but 22re still fuel injected. it has lots moor hp and torqe its a 2.4L. 139hp. and im not shure the torqe because of the cam mod. also gearing im running a double t cases close to 6 to 1 and i might go even lower. if you dont understand you have never seen californian rock trails or tried them. low and slow and difacult as hell. aftermarket parts are cheaper and moore avalible. suzuki makes a good moter but thay are under powered and not good for running bigger tires. im going to sas axels and 35s. also i picked up a wrecked toyota for $100 so the swap was cheeper than finding a suzuki with a 2.0L.

Hey your engine swap is looking really good.  I like your decision to go with the Toyota 22RE.  It's a great motor with LOTS of potential above stock form.

Any new pictures of the work?  Keep us posted.

ok on msn auto, the 2.4l in a 91 toy pickup has 116 hp and 140#of torque.  So I would assume (I know ass out of u and me) that a 2.2 would have less power and torque.  closer to that our our humble 16v.  But you are right, there must be lots of available equipment to help in the "lack of power" department.  I will be interested to watch this project. http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Spec_Glance.aspx?year=1991&make=Toyota&model=Pickup&trimid=-1

ok im going to keep you updated. with posts called zuk toy. i just finished putting the trans and t casses together and meshered it to see how much driveshaft i lost about 6 inchs. i hope there will be enough room im going to do the axel twist and point the pinion at the t case that should help. i was playing with my trans and in first gear with both the t casses in lowe one turn of the inpute shaft turns my output about 1/4 of an inch. wow. low low. im going to put the trans in hopefully this week. also a stock 91 toy engine has 119 hp mine is not stock. bigger pistons, moore compreshion and cam, mine runs about 139 hp. if i add hedder and bigger intake i can get even moore. for you zukers that are interested in this project keep the feedback comming so i know people are interested.
