sj410 ?
« on: December 08, 2008, 06:58:49 PM »
Just picked up an 82 sj410 tintop in not bad shape.  After using the search function I still have a few questions.  What would the stock diff gear ratio be?  Does the 82 transfer case have the lower gears that you can swap for a samurai t-case?  I also have an 88.5 samurai so  was wondering about the t-case swap for lower gearing.  I also have a 79 lj80, what would the diff gear ratio be in that?  Thankful for any info you can provide.  Thanks.

Long long ago I found a forum specifically geared for SJ's. I'm sure a few clever Google searches could dig it up?

Not sure on the LJ, but your SJ-410 has a 10% lower gear ratio in the transfer case then a stock Samurai.  However your 1st gear is higher on the 4 speed.  Your axles have 4.10 gears in them.

If your going to wheel it heavily you might want to swap Samurai hardware underneath it.  As for transfer case gear swaps, when I ordered them I was told they do not fit in the SJ-410 transfer case.  But a pre 88.5 Samurai (SJ-413) transfer case is a direct bolt in.

There are two 410 t-cases. The earlier version won't accept aftermarket gears but the later version with the 4wd light switch will.

Thanks guys.  I don't want to regear the t-case, I was thinking I could put the 410 t-case into my samurai to have lower gearing in it.  But I just found a couple sets of tracker 4.62's to put into my samurai.  Also going with a tracker 1.6  8 valve motor swap so that should keep me happy.  That way I can leave the sj410 unmolested.  Thanks again.

The gears in your LJ are 4.56, the thirds bolt right in your SJ 410.

1.6L swaps are so 1990. Do the 2.0L swap. 40% more power. Mmmm.... power.

The 410 has 45bhp, something wrong with that 2ltr. The 1.6 is still the easiest and cheapest swap. There are additional complications with the 410 though, the transmission tunnel is smaller on the pre 84 models and so needs modifying to take the 413 gearbox. Engine mounts will need to be moved too.
