Gear oil ?

Gear oil ?

Hi
Is the Coascal  gear oil of Advance Auto a good oil for my samurai ?

Never heard of Coascal oil. Google came up with nothing. But, I can tell you all oil is good oil. It just depends on how long you want it to last. More expensive oils have more expensive detergent packages to make them last longer, so they don't need to be changed as frequently. Unless you get into REALLY expensive oils which have voo-doo-magic that only does someone good if they have a 400HP drag monster. In our lightweight low HP suzuki's that extra $$$ for voo-doo magic is completely wasted. Check out: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ for good oil & fluids talk.

Do you mean Coastal Oil, like the cheaper than name brand stuff they have at auto parts stores? I think they also make grease cartridges for grease guns.

in the FSM it says to hypoid gear oil? i remember using that stuff for my old silver wing honda ( woods beater )

Any gear oil that meets the manufacturers specifications will work fine.  However if you live in cold climates you will find synthetic gear oil will save you gas and make your vehicle have more power at the wheels.  The synthetic oil will not get thick like molasses in cold.  Last winter I found my Tracker seemed to really be down on power. This season I changed to synthetic oil in the Trans, Tranfer case and both differentials. The difference was dramatic. I have a long hill I coast down to work each day.  Last winter the Tracker would hardly maintain speed.  This winter it coast the same as in summer. Now if you change to synthetic gear oil be sure to use the correct gear oil.  Use the specification of GL5 for the differentials and GL4 for the transmission and transfer case.
