Samurai Heavy duty wheel bearings???

Wouldn't it be easier to use hydraulic's on the rear steer? Thats what the rear steer rock buggies use.

Try giving Trail Tough a call, I have seen a couple there.

For a samurai, buy toyota pickup axles and retrofit the factory toy e-locker into them....   i forget where I saw the article but do a google search, should hit it...

Factory e=locker was on 90-97 landcruisers i believe....  solid axle f and r....and 62" wide...  :D

thanks phloop. now youve got me thinkin front and rear hydraulics. that way both front and rear steer all the time. gona have to add a few rotations to the steering wheel though so its not too touchy. and find a way to lock the rear for highway use. but its not all that exspensive realy. found a bunch of options though. thanks again. dont know if ill do anything with all this but ill come up with a system anyway just for poops and laughs.

Keep the front stock steering and the rear hydraulic if you are going to be driving it much on the street. Just in case of the lawyers getting on you in case of a wreck. :o

Check out the monster trucks also. They have front and rear hydraulics with the front being controlled by the steering wheel and the rear with some thing like a switch or lever.

Lotsa good ideas out there.

If I was to do a rear steer I would use the front axle assembly.
 Roll the whole thing upside down to correct the gear rotation.
 Weld in a new bunge for oil filling
 Grind the ball ends loose and rotate 180 deg and reassemble.
 The leaf spring mounts will be set up for spring over.

 No fancy parts just work out your rear steering control and youre about done.

 An added bonus is that the pinion would be on the high side of the case giving you better clearance. ;)

I've seen a Sammy frame converted to rear wheel steering. You will need to either use a wider than stock axle or narrow the rear frame rails. Otherwise there won't be enough clearance to turn the wheels.

SO I personally thing that toy front landcruiser with e-lockers would be just fantastic for this.  Front setup is manual/power steering, rear has to be hydro??


Too bad there wasn`t a way to do it with links...  but that would be awful messy.... just thinking of the expense of hydro steering...very very not cheap....

Cheaper than you think. An engine driven hyd. pump and a cyl. on the rear axle is a lot easier than the monkey motion idea of a steering rod going to the rear. Heck, you can upgrade the PS pump and run both front and rear with it.

Besides, with a rear steer controlled by the steering wheel the same as the front there would be no way too lock the rear straight for running down the road.

i am a bit leery about road legalization though...  would be a shame to have police take your new toy away after investing all that time and money...

as far as street legality of it i live in riverton wyoming and as far as i can tell they dont give a crap about it as long as they dont see it putting people in danger. they have no emissions lays they inforce here. well unless youre blanketing the street with a smoke screen everywhere you go. there are a couple ford guys here who have their trucks setting on 50" tall tractor tires and they just barely fit between the yellow lines on the street. i see them every day. thats why i love living here. you can be as stupid as you want unless youre dragging somone else down with you.

Some cars came with electric power steering pumps, and saturns have all electric steering from the factory I belive, they have changed a few laws I bet sence them having no steering gear, it would seem that an all hydro setup would now be legal.
