EGR Code Help
« on: June 01, 2008, 07:27:24 PM »
My check engine light came on and I had the codes read.  The egr code came up.  I automatically assumed that the EGR valve was clogged.  I bought the gasket and pulled it off put it was pretty clean of carbon and the plunger moves by hand.  I think that it is not getting the proper vacuum to the EGR.  I checked all of the vacuum lines for damage and found nothing.

Where should I start looking next?

You need to check that the Vacuum Solenoid Valve is working. Put 12V across it and see if it opens.

Forgive me for my ignorance.  Where is the solenoid located?

On the front of your valve cover.  You should have a vacuum diagram under your hood that shows how everything is connected.

Also, the EGR error light will come on if tube is clogged, not the EGR Valve itself.  You can find a few threads on cleaning it with the Search feature.

The EGR passage is most likely clogged where the pipe goes into the intake manifold.  Disconnect the pipe and put a small (6") piece of 1/8" cable with the end slightly frayed into a drill,  to ream out the junk built up in the passage in the intake manifold.......

That is a neat way to do it.  I just used some bailing wire and time.  And a lot of carb cleaner.
