idle adjustment screw
« on: April 07, 2007, 03:49:23 PM »
I've got a low (550 rpm) warm idle on my 95 Kick (1.6 16v).  Cold idle and idle-up functions are all good.  No codes being thrown.

The idle screw is normally the last thing I touch on a vehicle, but I've done a bunch of diagnostics including IAC, ECT, and TP sensor tests and wiring harness checks.  Timing and compression are good.

So, I finally decided to give the idle adjustment screw a 1/8 turn clockwise after match marking the current position.  No change in idle speed.  Bit by bit I eventually turned it a full turn clockwise.  Nothing.  Then I tried the same thing counterclockwise.  Nothing.  I then set it back to the match marks.

Now, all the idle adjustment screws I have played with before were snug, and small adjustments produced immediate effects.  This one had little resistance.  Hmmm . . .

Two questions:

1) Do these idle screws tend to back way out over time, explaining the lack of resistance and lack of idle speed change with a full turn in either direction?

2) Does clockwise turning increase the idle?  That would be typical, but I've read a couple of posts that made me wonder.

Thanks.

hello
when you turn the screw can you see if the butterfly is moving with it as you turn the screw in? if not it may have back out on you some i would turn the thing in till i could see the butterfly begain to movethen you idle should come up also. i had the same problem a while back and did not get no where with it like you i thought by moving it maybe a turn it would bring the idle up but it did not so i brought the idle up using the throttle cable and nailed it down work good but as i got to checking things out i just started turning the idle screw in and it brought the idle up like it was supposed to. hope this helps you out.
thanks rick.

I've had the same experience with my 95 16v. My past experience with idle screws is pretty much the same as yours, minor movement, immediate results. The wording in the service manual leads me to believe there is no direct connection between the idle screw and the butterfly, the connection is made electrically, and you are actually turning a potentiometer. The service manual also states ( this is for a 95 16v 0nly, as it's the manual I have) you need to use a diagnostic scanner to get the correct setting, as it's a matter of setting the pot correctly. Not having the diagnostic tool, I just kept trying a bit more turn, start and run till warm, repeat until I got It where I needed it. It still fluctuates sometimes, drops down as low as 600, but idles back up again after a couple of seconds. Good luck.
