Samurai build advice
« on: February 05, 2008, 01:10:21 PM »
I purchased a 88 samurai about 2 months ago that has 31x12.50 boggers, spring over,4.19 transfer case gears, cage, winch, bumpers, and a couple other little things...the first month i had it i didnt get to drive it, and the last month ive went every weekend and have loved it..These things are mini tanks...Well my motor is about done for so im going to swap in a 1.6 16v tracker motor sometime here soon... when thats finally done i plan on converting over to wrangler leaf springs and yota axels..this is where i need help on what size tires i should get so i know which leaf springs to get...im wanting 33x14  boggers but i was thinking about 35s and didnt no if that would be to big???? Im looking for all around performance, so which size do you think would be best? any help would be great...josh

35" on a samurai seems too big to me. I'm almost unstoppable in my 31" unlocked. I like keeping my lower CG though....

I was considering the upgrade to 35" tires, but decided there really wasn't much I couldn't climb up with the 33x12.5" tires, and I don't break that much either.  Heck, took me 3 years to go through my first birf and rear axle.

Now if only they hadn't gone within 5 minutes of each other...  :P

I wouldn't go with the 14.5 width though, just a bit to wide.  You might try and find a used pair of 33" or 35" tires to test your rig out with after you do the lift.  Or even better, find a pair you can borrow for a run to help you decide.

Here is a sammi on 35s, YJ leafs, shackle reverse, with the front pushed 3" forward and the rear back 3".  Looks good to me and nice and flexy.

I plan on running a 34x10.5 LTB on my sami once i get it all set up, i want to stick with a narrow wheel because the sammi weight is so low.  No need for some really wide tired, for the kind of wheeling that i do.

This sami is not mine, i have just been half assed copying this samurai. Doing mostly the same stuff he is doing.  He is running a 4.16 T case with 5.29s R&P's.  His steering box is out of a Toyota Celica, of which I'm also planning on doing.

Here are some more pics for your viewing pleasure.

If for some reason my Zuki doesn't mee the low reserve then I will offer to sell you my 1.6L for a really good deal because I will be keeping her and putting in a small block Chevy 350 with automatic transmission from Zuki Conversions, Inc...
