1987 Samurai Troubles
« on: May 15, 2008, 09:42:11 AM »
Well I've got an '87 Samurai, and it's been running like crap lately, and I can't seem to nail down the problem. It mostly happens on morning starts, but it's happened a few other times too. It'll run fine for a few seconds, then just choke out. I can keep it running, but only if i hold the gas all the way down then it only runs at about 2000 rpm's and the exhaust smells horribly of gasoline. Any suggestions? I've changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and fuel filter, and sprayed the carb and choke with enough cleaner to kill a horse. I just don't know what to try next.

check your catalitic(sp) converter. could be plugged creating to much back pressure for the engine to run. Or the fuel pump could be going or gas line is plugged.

Anyone else?

When's the last time you tuned it...changed the plugs, adjusted the valves, timing?  I know with my SJ410, I adjusted the the valves monthly to keep it running like a top...and I didn't push my Suzki.  You have to remember these are little 4 cylinder alumininum blocks.  They do what they do, but they can't be pushed without fatique.

Yeah I've done plugs (x2), cap, rotor, valve adjustment, fuel filter, played with the choke flap, still does it. Haven't checked the timing though, so that could be a problem. It burns some oil too, but it'll do it even with spanking new plugs. I'm pretty easy on 'er though. I have found that if I just start it up, let it warm up for a few minutes without touching anything she runs lots better, which is weird because we're in central texas at the moment. I'll check the timing, but how do I check the converter?
