Sometimes $500.00 might seem like alot but the return might be greater. For instance the TC gears cost $480.00 rite now on sale from Trail Tuff. If you bought the 6:5:1 TC from them with exchange it would be $840.00 on sale with core. That is a $360.00 savings. Figure the wear / tear / fuel savings in which is $$$ back to your pocket. You also increase the sale value of the vehicle too.
Likewise if he purchases 5:13 3rd members these can be picked up for less than $100.00 a piece. This is another option for less $$$ but the bang for the buck isn't as great depneding on the driving needs.
I'm older and anm building mine as a Toy, but I drive it daily. I have a budget set for what I will spend. My best advice is research what you want out of the vehicle and purchase items accordingly within your price range. There are some great deals out there in the forum classifieds / Craigslist / Ebay / etc...
