Howdy,
anyone have the basic tune up specs for an 86?  Timing, spark plug and points gap, and any possible help with tuning the carb would be appreciated.

After the BS that krept up here is some info for you. Timing is 10deg. BTDC at 800rpm. Plugs are NGK BPR-5ES, plug gap is from .027 to .031, and the point gap is .008 to .016.

These came from the FSM.

That's wierd, My 86 doesn't have points. ??? Wait, I'll go and check.....:o No points.

Maybe you mean the air- gap on the square shaft that comes up the center of the distributor? I wonder if that goes out of adjustment. Hmmm... :-\

I just talked to William at Hawk (where does all the money go :-X) and he said that the Japan Samurais had points and the ones they shipped to the states didn't. I can't help but wonder if that's true.

I actually had to adjust the air gap on my previous Samurai but that was only because I was messing around with the distributor and it grounded out and blew the fuse. I wild guessed the problem and as soon as I put the gap back in it solved the problem. Sure had me confused though.

Thanks for the info.  I picked the sami up just a couple weeks ago, put on a top on it and have jsut started driving it  in the last few days.   I was just assuming there was a set of points in there, haven't pulled the cap to check anything yet.  I started on the plugs, but remembered I loaned my brother my plug sockets, so it will have to wait a day or so.  He also has my tach  ::) so i'm not sure where it's idling.  By ear it sounded way to high and was driving me nuts, so turned it down to where it about sounds right.  And it turns out he has my timing light so...

Idle still smells real rich, is there a mixture adjustment screw on the factory carb?  It came from about 2k feet lower from where I live, so unless the carb will adjust itself I don't think its going to get any better.
