Rear locker how too with pics.
« on: July 28, 2004, 04:46:05 PM »
Hey guys

Did my second locker and took alot of pics here are the steps.

1.Jack ur truck up and so forth make sure its on jackstands.

2. Remove the tires and brake drums.

3. Remove the 4 12mm nuts on the back side of the    backing plate holing the bearing and seal retianer in place.

4. Get a slide hammer and remove the axles, They might be tight like mine were so be paitient.

5. Drain ur diff out and then remove the 8 14mm nuts holding the rear dif pumkin inplace.

6. Take a chisel and  tapp it gentaly to wedge it so u can brake the Diff from the axle. Remove the diff out of the axle beware it is heavy when u are on ur back lol.

7.Take ur rear drum and a bold and put the drive shaft side of the diff in the center of the rear drum. take the one bolt and hold the diff straight up.

8. With the diff sitting stright up mark the bearing caps with a punch or red paint to make sure they all go on the same side.

9. Now u will see the side lash adjusters mark them at 12 oclock with paint or punch.

10. Now remove the 2 12mm bolts holding the lash adjuster retainers.

11. Remove the bearing caps gentaly u might need to give them a slight tapp but make sure not to move the bearing lash adjusters leave them in place and lift ur diff straight out.

12. Lay ur diff on some rags upright and mark the 3 pieces. The upper section, ring gear, lower section.

13. remove all the 10 14mm bolts out and place them on a rag.

14. Remove the top section the rign gear will fall down lay it there.Becarfull there are some shims that may stick to the upper section put them back on the side gears.

15. Remove the side gear and take a look at them to inspect them. Check for wear on them. Mine were fine.

16.Inspect the spider gears for wear and tare. Nwo there are 3 pins u need to punch out to remove the spider gears.

17.Now remove the the lower side gear and inspect it to see for wear.

18. Clean the housing all out in parts cleaner then lay it on its back, Use some axle grease to coat the inside with.

19.Take u  Factory side gear and the shims and grease them all up and install them the same way u took them out.

20.Take ur new locker out of ur box greas it up and install it teeth to teeth on top of ur factory side gear.

21.Take the springs and the dowl pins out of ur bag and take the orange and red and put the orange in the center of the red spring.

22. Now on the locker u will see two oval holes these are for the springs stuff them with some grease and insert the springs on each side. Now the other two holes are for the dowels install them too.

23. Now it should look like this installed.

24.Now install the large shim that comes with the locker and then u can install ur diff pins like they came out.

25. Now after installing the diff pins and the holding pins in the diff u can intall the locker along with the springs and dowels, Now when intalling this it goes on 90deg different . Basicaly the dowel pin will make contact with the springs on the other locker. And then install ur shim that came with the locker.

26. Take ur factory side gear and shims clean them and grease them up and install them teeth to teeth. Now u have it pretty much all done. fewww lol

27.Now reistall the ring gear and upper section aliging them the same way u removed them and tighten the 10 14mm bolts along with some RED loctite.

28. Now take the bearing races clean them and grease them up and install them on the same side they came from.

29. To install the Diff back in is a pain u can move one side of the bearing side lashers but count the turns and drop ur diff in .

30. Now the bearing caps are a bit of a pain cause u got to make sure u get them on straight so install them loosely and make sure the side lash adjusters can move then torque the 4 17mm bolts down along with some RED loctite.

31. Clean the diff housing out with a raxor and brake clean them silicone all around with some RTV sealant use alot just be sure that it stays outside the housing.

32. Install the diff and torque the 8 14mm bolts down and ur done and intall ur drive shaft and rear axles.

sorry if the pics suck and this DYI sucks lol

It looks like the spider gears don't go back in.  That the locker takes their place.  Is that correct?

Hi,

Great guide !

I'm getting mine installed this weekend, but Haynes does not specify the torque values for the bolts inside the diff.

Can someone with a factory manual publish the tourqe setting for steps 27,30 ?

thanx,

Rafi

side bearing cap bolts  70 - 100 nm
ring gear bolts              80-90 nm
diff case                        37-45 nm
side bearing adjuster   9-14nm
diff carrier bolts            18-28 nm
filler plug                      35-50 nm
drain plug                    18-25 nm

my lockright instruction manual said to put the side gears in the opposite sides from where they were origionally.
god must love crazy people,he made so many of them!!!
