turbo theory 101
« on: December 16, 2003, 12:14:32 PM »
Please bear with me, as I have no pics, only explanations.
I intend to turbo charge my Sunrunner.  problem; money, chip, tinkering etc.  What I propose is an easier way around this.  leave intact original fi setup.  above tbi, bolt turbo ( custom mounting bracket, similar to late 80 transam, riviera) with a 4barrel sitting on top of that.  Yes, blow directly into tbi.  the carb will need its own fuel supply.
For this to work, the primary and idle ccts of the carb will have to be disabled, butterflies removed.  on part throttle, the fi doeas ALL work and air just passes through the blank primary of the carb, not doing anything.  Under appropriate vacum conditions, (bit of trial and error)wastegate will open, pressurising intake(Normally this is where problems arise).  At this time, the secondary opens up, providing more fuel that is required.  Since both need to be linked wia linkage, the secondary won't open without boost, vice versa.  At full boost the carb will be the primary fuel delivery method, the fi (through the 02) just keeps the mixture within range.

If you feel energetic, you could relocate the tbi to act as the primary, via linkage the secondary and boost will come on at predetermined pedal position

Any questions?

Do you write any science fiction novels? ;) You're pretty creative. Theres many problems with your idea and you should read up a little more on basic turbo systems to get a good understanding what happens when and how it works.

easier and better would be to use the Carb to feed
the engine all the time, scrap the FI, BTW a suck
through design is hard on turbo seals, and one backfire
could blow up the whole intake system   :(
