Overheating Problem

So the electric cooling fan on my 94 efi tracker quit. i replaced the fan and now it wont kick on. no matter how hot it gets. So i went ahead and hard wired the fan. Now with the fan running all the time the truck still overheats at an idle. When i take it down the highway though it does ok. coolant level is fine. But i cannot figure out why its overheating in town/at an idle. Its funny that so many issues would come up with the cooling all at once. Anyone have any idea what may be the cause?

If it was the water pump why would it cool goin down the highway? and by cool, i mean it runs at normal operating temp, not even a little high.

 A number of things can cause overheating, plugged radiator or coolant lines, weak water pump, non funtioning water pump, ( look for coolant coming out of the weep hole on the upper side of the pump) incorrect timing ( too far off advanced or retarded especially, can cause overheating.) You mentioned having an electric fan, that's not a stock item. I'm believe Trackicks came with a clutch operated fan, driven off the water pump pully. Check the simple things first, belt tension to the water pump being one.  A non-functioning fan will cause overheating in slow going, but at highway speeds there's enough air moving through the radiator to not need a fan. I replaced my clutch fan with a switchable electric fan so I could turn it off during deep water crossings. I don't even use it ( the fan) on the highway, and it's off most of the time in town as well.  Start by checking your timing. Specs are located on a tag under the hood, or in the FSM.

Is it truly overheating or is the gauge telling you it's overheating? You might have a bad thermal sensor that reads the coolant temp and relays it to your temperature gauge. It's a possibility anyways.

Goal!!! So i got it fixed. had to tighten the belt on the water pump. turns out it was slippin. thanks guys.

Glad you got it fixed. I replaced EVERYTHING on the cooling system, including the head gasket, earlier this year. Turned out to be a bad waterpump. The worst part was the new one I bought and installed first was bad too, thus I just kept replacing stuff!!
