rear end?????
« on: March 09, 2007, 06:32:29 AM »
newbie qustion sorry,  Which year had a 10 bolt rear end. Ive got a 1996 2 door 5 speed, i'm guessing it's a 12 bolt, will a 3rd from a the erlier 10 bolt fit in my 1996? What i'm thinking is swapping an older 10 bolt, in my current diff if it's possible. Any help is greatly appreciated, thankd ahead of time.

I don't think a 10-bolt carrier will fit in a 12-bolt axle housing.

In fact, the ARB Air locker for 10-bolt vs 12 bolt is even a different model, so I guess there's a lot more different than just the number of holes.

I've got some 5.89 for a 10 bolt, so i want to find a way to put them in. That being said, could i swap the entire rear axle from an older tracker with a 10 bolt rearend into my 1996?? Is this possible???? How would i identify a 10 bolf rearend without taking the rear diff apart, (i'm pretty sure the bone yard wouldn't let me take all there tracker apart ;D ;D. Thanks

Bob, I'm pretty sure a 10 bolt third will fit into a 12 bolt housing.

You can't swap carriers, but you can swap entire thirds. The issue is that with his 96 he just will have to find a way to bungee up his ABS line that ran down to his 12 bolt third.

The 10 bolt rear won't have a connector or even a spot for one for your ABS. You have a line that runs down from the body that connects to the connector on your current 12 bolt rear third. Since you won't be able to use it, you'll have to "bungee it up" (bungee cord) or fasten it up in some other way.

You'll also get a persistent BRAKE light on the dash, unless you unplug the nifty ECU looking black box on your floorboard under the brake pedal.

Your front doesn't have ABS. These things only had ABS in the rear.

So yes, the only thing you really have to worry about is the ABS cable.

(I've swapped 10 bolts into my 12 bolt rear that I had)

I swapped a 10 bolt carrier into my 12 bolt rear in order to fit my 5:83s. No ABS to worry about over here though.

What has me wondering, and scratching my head, is this:

When I put in my 5.83's, and ARB, I'm pretty sure I "lost" the "toothed ring" that drives the ABS pickup - but I MAY have reconnected the ABS cable.  That would mean that  the ABS would see the rear axle as "never turning", and it would kick in the ABS - wouldn't it?

I do NOT have a continuous BRAKE light, so I must have hooked the cable back up, but I really do NOT think I put the interrupter back in.  How curious.

Maybe it's plugged in so it completes the circuit, so you don't get a BRAKE light, but since you don't have a toothed ring, it can't do anything?
