Aussie 2L Vitara headers ... Fit a 2002 Tracker 2L?
« on: August 27, 2007, 10:51:39 AM »
I finally found a dealer (in Australia) who sells 2L headers for their Vitaras.  Their Vitaras equal our 1998 and earlier Trackers.  He said he has sold about 20 headers to the US market and has not received any complaints.  I don't think Suzuki or chevy offered the 2L motor before 1999... so I'm thinking there are about 20 people who are running GV body styles here in the US with this 2L header on their trucks.

Does anyone have any info on whether the header fits... the 2L heads are the same... etc?  I don't want to spend $260 plus hsipping and then have to hassle them with a return.

You need to find out if that's for the 2.0L I4 or 2.0L V6 motor.  We saw the I4, but the 2.0L V6 never made it to our shores but was common overseas.

We got a swb Kick(Vitara) Sport here from '96 - '99 with the J20A 2.0 4cyl engine. They should also work in the Kick Sport 1.8 as the only difference is the stroke. There is one company that makes a header for this engine and that is Hurricane Headers. They can also offer them ceramic coated if you wish but it is $$$. http://hurricaneheaders.com.au/hurricane/products.htm  Nobody does a header for the V6.

Also, just to confirm for you that this is the same engine as in the later models and I can't see a reason for it not to fit. I happen to have a set of these headers sitting around waiting for me to fit them. If you want any particular measurements etc. just let me know.

Sweet!  Thanks for the info CJ and Tim.  I didn't realize anyone made a V6 2L engine.  I'll check out that hurricane link you provided when my DSL gets back up to speed.  I'm kinda shocked at how limited the aftermarket products for GVs appear to be.   CJ, are the exhaust ports on the 2L head round or rectangular?

Oh, and while I have you guys on the net, I wrote to Jeff about his coil spacers he is making out of that urethane plastic.  He wasn't sure if they would work on a GV type body.  Do either of you have any experience using them on a GV?  Jeff has them on his Suzuki Sport.  I measured my spring bumper tube diameter and it measured just shy of 2.5 inches.  Jeff told me his comes in a standard 2.4" but he would cut the inside diameter wider if I needed it.  My limited experience with all these trucks is there are a boat load of interchangeable parts on them.

I had four of the earlier Suzukis/Geo/Trackers (a 91, 94, 95, and 96).  I screwed up and sold my last one which was a 1995 Geo tin top.  It was ALMOST cherry.  The one I currently have is my 2d GV Tracker (this one has a 5 spd tranny) and I hope to keep him for quite a awhile.  Wish I had found this forum twelve years ago!  I would've had a blast with all my earlier beasts.

Thanks again.  Onward through the fog!

I don't see an EGR port on that header, does the GV not have one? Also it looks like it tucks in pretty well so maybe this isn't an issue but on a US truck the steering shaft would be on that side.

I put GV springs on a Sidekick, so I would say that Sidekick spacers will work on a GV.

Good pics CJ, thanks very much.  appears to be about 7" of total width from the inside of the flange to the outside tube wall.  I will check under the bonnet and eyeball  my engine to see how that works with the steering shaft.   Are those the Hurricane brand headers you were refering to?  Are they chromed or silver painted (I can't be sure in the photo)?

Ref the GV springs in the Sidekick/Tracker... I figured they were very similar.  I think I'm going to go with a short set.

Thanks to all youse guys for your feedback on this subject.  Muchos gracious!

Yes, they are the Hurricane headers. They come standard with blue paint but I sent mine out to be ceramic coated  ;D Hurricane can organise that for you too but I got it done locally cheaper. I can measure the total width if you'd like.

Yes, please.  I would appreciate it if you would measure from the head side of the flange to the outter side of the down pipe.  That should tell the story.

Besides a better look, what are the other advantages of ceramic coating the header?  More heat disapation?  Last longer (no rust)?

Thank you.

You were pretty much on the money with 7". That is at its widest from the manifold flange at the rear of the head to the outside of the pipes.

The ceramic coating does a couple of things apart from looking bling. It helps the headers last a lot longer but more importantly it also insulates the pipes better so that there is less heat buildup around the engine and also keeps the exhaust gas velocity up. It almost doubles the cost though. Speaking of which when I picked up the headers from Liverpool Exhaust (who are also Hurricane Headers) the girl asked me what price I was quoted and the price I told her (which somebody had told me on the phone a couple of weeks earlier) was about AUD$100 less than the retail price so that is what she charged me  ;D I think somebody made a mistake somewhere but I was very happy  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for the measurement.  I just took a measurement under the hood and it appears there is a full 8 inch separation between the actual head flange and the steering shaft on my 2002 Tracker.  For the record, my 2000 Tracker which I just sold (and which also had the 2L) would have been very similar as well.  Mine has a rectangular two-bolt connector clamp half way up on the steering shaft which is about 3 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide so I figure even when it rotates there will remain at least 7 3/4 inches of clearance.  It appears those Hurricane headers will be good-to-go.

Thank you for the info on the ceramic coating as well.  Good to know.  I've wondered how long a set of standard tube headers would last, especially if I keep him for several years.   Finding a replacement header for him (because of rust-out) in five more years may be an even bigger issue than finding a set today.

Take care and behave.
