big bang from rear axle
« on: September 21, 2005, 01:27:15 PM »
hallo all, I'm new here and I have a problem with my 87 zuk. when I take turns in a slow speed my rear axle is banging hard. I'm not talking about click click click click. I mean big booms that cause the zuk to like disengage and engage from the t-case. I've driven withought the rear d-shaft in front wheel drive and it didn't happen. any Ideas?
Is it the third or what?

Thanks.

I would bet you have a tooth off either the ring gear or pinion gear. Time to pull the rear third.

o.k guys how's this - I've pulled it out and checked everything. all teeth are acounted for and backlash is good. and I think that if I had a broken tooth than I would feel something when I drive straight. No?
any way could the problem be from a crooked birfield?

may seem like a dumb question, but are your U-Bolts tight??  If they are slipping just a little, that could be where it's at.
Also, what's your U-joints in your D-shafts look like?  Binding of these could also cause it to pop and bang like crazy, but I would think it would have blown by now if that were the case.

There's no birfields in the rear.

Do you have a lockrite (auto locker)?

u bolts tight and u joints new in all of the shafts. I do have a lockright but I took it out and put the regular diff in and it does the same thing. I think maybe my gear or pinion are crooked or maybe an axle.

bent axel housing? ... that would cause some serious banging while turning.

why would make a noise on turns and not all of the time?
From just looking at it it doesn't seem to be bent but i guess I'll have to check it and the axle and the gear.
Thanks for the ideas.
