question for digger and anyone with swampers
« on: March 13, 2005, 02:06:33 PM »
Okay, so
I run 235/75/15's and they are quite aggressive A/T treads (basically mudders with siping)

however... just for play fun, I want to get some swampers
my delima... well I put on a 2" body lift (RRO)
should have enough room to clear 31's
and I kinda have 2 options in mind

1. the LTB
but they only come in 31 x 11.5, which are really fat... using my stock 5.5" steelies, they wouldn't have enough offset (rub rub rub)
I could buy some daytona's like from AR, but they only have 3.75 bs which is barely any different than my stock ones
and the fact they are bias ply kinda scares me, as I will still primariliy be driving on the road to and from these sites

2. the TSL radial
radial
31 x 9.5 (diggers)
looks like a mighty fine option if not primarliy rock crawling (not wide enough imo)

problem is that everyone told me they are outrageouly heavy, far heavier than any BFG, Goodyear etc..
I may not have enough power without changing my r&p

the next thing is this, i'm very happy with my 235's, never been stuck
I was thinking of going locker, but people tell me gainin axel clearance is more important

also...
I was told, if I wasn't going to be rock crawling all that much, just sand/mud/hill climbs
I should leave my axels' open as less things break and a set of TSL's on my light tucketteer should be good enough

your opinion guys?

I really love my swampers. I've been running through mucky sludge up to the door trim line and been able to stop in the middle of it and still get going again just fine! As for weight, they are not as heavy as I thought they would have been. I just picked up a set of swamper copys in approx the same size and they are way heavier! I picked the size I did based off of the tallest I could squeeze on my Tracker while still keeping with radials. Plus the narrowness helps them fit better, especially with 3.75" backspaced rims. With the stock rims, I was rubbing the frame with 215's! I don't know about the fitment on a newer model... I needed a 2 inch body lift, the 1" coil spacers and some creative floor board hammering to fit 31's on my 90...

I haven't changed my gears and the 8valve engine is still doing pretty good. Plus I am not locked either and just adding the swampers made such a big improvement in offroad traction, it almost seemed like I was locked. If you have room for the swampers, go for it, you wont regret it!
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

i have 30 x 10.5s tsl sx  i love them, though they might not be as heavy as some they are heavy, at least i noticed the diference right away and am now going to change out the r&p.  but i drive on the road alot too.  if i was just off road i wouldnt really care.  i have 2.5 body lift and 3 sus lift and 1" spacers on ol heep rims with 1" more backspace than stock.  any less and i would rub, because of the width.  i like the look but wish i would have went narrower.  i have not broke anything but i do hear that they can cause more breaks.  but, you will really like them and they are pretty cheep too i thought, good luck 8)

do you use your car for daily use?
I probably will have to change out the rims... maybe
they're not much wider than my 235's right now

right now my vehicle has no problems running 235's for power, on a flat, I can hold down 5th and get right up to 85+ (haven't tried much more)

kinda concerned though, no siping etc...
if I were to use these everday, well i'd feel it' be a waste of my 235's lol
but also', without the siping, we have alot of ice/hard pack
how would they do?

can't say how they would do from personal experiance because it doesn't snow in southwest louisana. however i do test run swampers i am there small diameter light fitment test rig. that means no tires over 33" and my rig is close to 2000lbs. if u were going to run them every day i would say ssr radials because other than the truxus m/t and the iroc radial they r the smoothest. the truxus r the smoothest but they r less agressive. the ircos only come in 33" soon to be smaller. i brought my 33's back 2 weeks ago and they told me to come back in a week to get a set of 31.5x11.5x15 irocs. they will be sold as 32's. i run 31x11.5 LTB's as my main tire. they do fine in mud and rock i am also locked in the rear so that helps. they aren't to bad on the road and for the price u can't beat them. well idon't know if this helped but good luck. oh the IROC is by far my favorite even over the bogger.

I run the 32x10.50s Radial swampers (sipped) ;D
Run them for a year as a daily driver with the stock gears (not a D.D. much, work to late to leave it out in the dark alone)
No problems.
but with only a 2"BL and 31"s I'd trim the fender a Lil bit and run 15x7 and the stock BS
1"inch coil spacers would work nice ;D
95 2dr Geo Tracker with Calmini 6"inch combo lift, 32'inch BFGs M/Tlocked and loaded--D.D is my 06 Racy RED Aerio SX AWD

the skinnyer the tire, the better it does off road, especailly on light trucks like suzuki's.... I run 32" 7" wide military style tires on my zuk... there also 8 ply and I can run them down to 3 psi with out any problems... but if you want something easyer to find, go with 31/10.5 interco trxus mt's... they work nicely on a 5.5" wide rim.. and definatly do the trick on and off road

I run 31-10.5  ssr's on my sammy and they work great in the deep mud but not on hard pack slimy stuff, you would have to get a tire grover on them and loose a couple of pounds, I hear that they also chunk off the outer lugs on rocks but mine are fine I guess as long as you  limit your rocks to about a three foot dia. your fine,as for the horse power issue the mud just falls off of them,I run a set of tires on mine for the snow that are 33-12.5 like a bfg mt knock off and when I hit mud I don't have enough horse power to spin them clean and stay on the trail with my 16 valve, for snow the knock offs have a thin side wall and flex great for the snow and are lighter than the ssr's but the ssr's are only marginal on the deep snow. so ssr's  Rock.

I have 29x11.50 SSR's and aired them down to 4-5 last weekend with no problems.  At that low air my Track just floated over the snow, and at 25 psi it cruises down the road fine.  They aren't much taller than a 235-75 so you won't gain much clearance but the R&P change isn't as nessesary.  They have about 10k on them and are starting to show a little wear but it was a D-D for about 6 months and I drive WOT on the E-way (65-85 mph depending on wind and who I'm drafting).

After sitting a few weeks they are about this [] square though and you can never get much of a balance on them.

Stripes (I didn't do them) ARE GONE!!!!!!!

to get the squareness out of them move your rig a couple of inches forward or back an hour or so befor you plan on driving it or air down below 20lbs like they should be to get them to heat up a little bit.

I am looking at new wheels and tires too...I called 4wheel Parts and the guy there said that he would not run the LTBs on the street. They are a heavy Bias ply and they can even grauntee(sp) roundness and they are a bitch to balance I guess.  I am looking at buying a set of the 33x12.50 TSL radials and for long trips I am gonna swipe my dads old all terrians.  With the 33x12.50 I am gonna run either a 3in or a 2.5in offset rim. Also 4wheel parts has a on road and OFFroad warrenty..If you destroy the tire and there is still at least 50% tread left they will give ya a new one free. After 50% it is prorated  down to the last 3/32 of a tire I think.

What size do you have?  Samy or Kick? I havent ruled them out completly yet..I have heard that they hook up really good offroad..So the jury is still out..I was just stating what the guy said..
