Tranny question.
« on: November 07, 2005, 10:10:15 PM »
I have a 88 and also a 93 Sammy.
Aside from the 93 having a little more power, injection and other mods, it seems to be actually geared lower.
Both are running same tire size and brands, locked, and as best as I remember the same diff. ratio.---
Any difference in transmition ratios between years? or is it just my imagination?

Ya I think your transfer case has a diffrent high range and your fifth gear is diffrent between the two,88 is taller(lower rpm on the tach at the same speed) not sure but your xfer case on the 93 could be 1.3 something in the high range.

Yes, the 5th gear overdrive is less deep in the later models, meaning it will have higher RPM at the same speed vs. the earlier model. I think 88.5 was the changeover time frame. Can anyone confirm?

Yes, 88.5 is the change over.

From 1986-1988 the fifth gear was 0.795. An easy way to identify this transmission is the large bolt head drain and fill plugs and the barrel style connectors for the switches.

From 1988.5 to 1995 the fifth gear was 0.865.  This transmission has 3/8" socket (female) drain plugs.  The electrical connectors are GM style connectors.

This is for the US market though.  I know in Germany they still had the 0.795 fifth all the way up to 2003 when they stop selling Samurais there.

25+ years of Samurai ownership!

Thanks guys. Yes the transmittions are different.
Was wondering about the ratios.
Just bought another junker for parts, 91 model.  $50.00
Complete but unfortunately "complete"ly rusted down.

stock t-case ratios, for at least, 1986-1995 are the same(high=1.409) and low=2.268) .   the only difference is the 5th gear in the tranny.
Tracker and Sidekick parts for sale.....PM me with your wants/needs.
