Fuel guage in reverse?

Huh

The Samurai I just bought has a curious feature: the gas guage works in reverse (as the gas gets used the guage shows more gas in the tank - when full I am on Empty).  I suspect this is because the wires are reversed.  Question is, if that is the case, then does it matter where I reverse the wires?  IF that is NOT the case, then what is up?

I have the same problem on my samurai too!

When I fill the tank it reads below empty. I reset the trip odometer, and as I put a hundred or so miles on, it will then show about a half tank. After it reaches the half tank mark, it will work correctly.

I don't think it will be wires mixed up, I am betting that it is a bad ground. I am not sure, it just where I will check first. If it is not a ground, I am leaning towards the fuel tank float. I have a spare tank just incase I need parts.

I have heard if your fuel gauge is stuck on E, that is a bad ground.

If your fuel gauge is stuck on F, that is a faulty gauge.

I haven't had time to fix mine yet, but I need to.

If you get your repaired, please post back to let us know what fixed it.  ;)

Ha, Ha, Ha,  :D that is exactly what mine does, when it is full it reads evpty and when it gets to about 1/2 it starts working normal.  I just fill it back up when it gets to E the second time.

I had the same problem with mine too. I found it was a ground problem on the sending unit.  I cleaned up a bolt on the tank where it sendinding unit is mounted in the tank and rand a ground wire to the frame.  After that the gauge worked great again.

You guys have it all wrong!
:D

E = 'enough' (gas)  You don't need anymore, keep on going.
F= 'fill' (it up)  You'll be pushing it home soon if you don't.

I see two wires going to the sending unit, I am assuming one is the ground, I didn't see "a" bolt, just a couple of bolts that mount it in the tank, are those the ones you are talking about?

How much (and where can you get) a sending unit anyway?

Yes the mounting bolts are what I grounded. The sending unit is groundd to the tank and as thigs rust and get dirty  ;D grounds seem to get lost.

I bought mine from the Dealer . I believe it was around $25-$30 bucks.  Even with the new sending unit I still had the problem until I cleaned up the sufaces and ran the ground wire to the mounting bolts.

Thanks for the input!

I will try it soon.

I kinda thought it would be a bad ground.  ;)
