Ok Guys don't yell at me to much for this. But a friend of mine just gave me a 2001 Geo LSI. Is that a 2.0 16 valve Zuki power plant in there? It sure looks like my 95 1.6 except for the weird looking intake (round). And it says 16 valve on the belt cover too. Problem is that she was driving it and it just plain quit she said. It cranks, gets fuel and has 165 lb comp. I'm thinking rubber band jumped a tooth. Any ideas?
It could have the 1.6 or the 2.0. Look at the sticker on the underside of the hood, it should make a reference to what engine it has.
The 1.6 has a timing belt.
The 2.0 has a timing chain.
If it just quit without making a sound, and it has the 1.6, then it could be a timing belt. If it has the 2.0, and didn't make any unusual sounds, I doubt it is the timing chain....they are usually pretty catastrophic when they come apart.
An easy way to check to see if the timing belt is intact is to pull the distributor cap off and turn the engine over....if the rotor moves, then the timing belt is intact.
